I checked out of both world, and domestic news/politics years ago. I know that was a poor choice, and I need to stay better informed. Can you guys catch me up on exactly what is going on over there at the moment? I especially missed how Russia got involved.

I'm not sure how well that can be done, without locking down the thread.

Anybody out there able to do that, better than I can (too long winded)?

Have you got a local radio station that you can listen to, that might carry some national programs?

It's very complicated and I don't keep up with it close but I'll give you what I think is going on.

Both the USA and Russia claim to be trying to get rid of ISIS only they have different opinions on how to do. The US is trying to over throw the Syrian President because they must think he is allowing ISIS to operate if not out right helping them. The Russians are trying to help the Syrian president thinking he is against ISIS. The USA claims the Russians are bombing the rebels that we have been supplying weapons to. The Russians say they are bombing ISIS.

I don't trust the Russians or The Syrians but sadly I can't trust our government either right now so I don't know who to believe. Christians or the one's really taking a beating over there right now.

I haven't heard Israel mentioned in anyway. Are we helping shelter them at all?

Our relationship with Israel is not where it should be. I don't feel like enough is being done to support them. There is quite a bit of tension between Obama and Netanyahu.

Assad is still the leader of what is left of Syria. We could not do much of anything because the Senate and Congress turned the President down about not doing much against Assad. So being that Syria being a sovereign nation we could do not every much. Assad invited Russia to come in and help so Russia can pretty much as it pleases until Assad is back in full power over Syria.

Russia was always invoked. They have had a key base in Syria for many decades.
The escalation is to keep Ukraine off the front page, kick some sand in Obama' face, and to hammer anyone who opposes heavy handed dictators (like Putin).
ISIS is a smoke screen.

America won't stand for anything in the region.....Putin sees this and reacts accordingly......that's where we are. Arabs of any religion will never be our friends and allies.

Putin is building his power base.
He has already warned obummer that he has nuclear weapons.
Hitler didn't stop when he started his invasions and I think we are seeing the same thing here.
Nations tend to turn dangerous (war) when their economy goes bad. Putin has economic problems. So do we.
We do not have any leadership. Raygun Reagan is not here anymore.
This could easily turn into one mell of a hess.

What have they done for us? We give them money and money and money and what do we get? A place to land our planes there? I just don't get it. Like most things our government is involved in, I feel it's a giant waste of my/yours/our tax dollars.

There is a religious/ biblical connection that secular people would not understand. (this is a general statement not directed to you personally)

Yep a place to land our planes. They also are our testing ground for our new weapons. Rather than do it here we simply let Israel do it but in real action, not war games. They are also the only democratic country in the entire region and our only real ally regardless of how often and how badly we screw them over. Unlike the current USA they are dependable. So far political correctness does not dictate how they defend their country or make other policy.

I don't like Netanyahu's policies.. he's a dangerous man.. Some of the quotes I've seen made me say "Did you really freaking say that???"

That said, Putin is a dangerous man too, but our media will always put a negative spin on what he does vs a positive spin on what Israel does.. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

I wouldn't know about Canadian news media, but US media the last few years has not been at all kind to Israel.
(Putin and Syria's president Assad are meeting face to face in Moscow today---I suspect this very much infuriates the White House and all it's occupants.)

The Syrian situation from a different perspective

The way I see it is Obama doesn't like Assad and has attempted to oust him using several rebel groups, which the US is supplying weapons. Obama has said that he's bombing ISIS, but in reality he is bombing around ISIS, which Putin thinks is pretty shytty. Putin doesn't like ISIS, but knows he has to get Syria right by eliminating the Syrian rebels to stabilize the country first, then he'll either line up on ISIS or cause the US to do what Obama said he was going to do. If the US doesn't get it done or get out of Putin's way it probably won't be pretty.

As far as Israel goes... I think Putin is doing the best he can when he has most of the Arab world wanting his country extinguished. I think he is using great restraint against Palestine when they are attacked almost daily.

Then there's Turkey that said they'll help bomb ISIS, but on their way to do that they hit the Kurds who are fighting ISIS on the ground.

Considering a lot of media and most national and private banks have deep ties to Israel... I think even if things aren't made rosey, they're still prettied up.

Putin, well.. I will say he's a statesman, which is more than I can say about the leaders of most western countries... When I see his speeches, I don't get the impression he's a puppet with a teleprompter, and his body language shows his conviction of believing in what he's saying.

I really have to laugh when a western leader says to Putin "... OR ELSE..." when we all know the 'or else' is a bluff.. And Putin knows it too. That's where it gets dangerous.

Fact is if Russia had been fighting the Taliban and ISIS with as much fervor as the US *said* it was, things would have been over in a hurry.

Wasn't Russia involved in Afghanistan before we were?
