What do you think will happen once African swine fever gets into our feral pig population ?

Clean up the back woods? Anything beyond that, let the pig farmers worry about it.

Wish something would wipe them out without transmitting to other animals.
Swine seem to be the perfect host for almost anything unwanted.

Swine fever is coming. It is just a matter of time. Vets talk tough about eradication after an outbreak, but what about all the feral hogs in the south?

Large scale commercial pork hit the central Minnesota last year. They are building a string of huge confinement hog facilities in the woods about every 10 miles. No feral hogs here, so perhaps they are safe?

We are in the same boat SS. Quad hog facilities continue to pop up as an alternative to going broke row cropping. (Another different way to go broke??) They run these new facilities very tightly with biosecurity measures. We have no feral hog population here either..too cold for too long???

Big feral hog populations in MB/SK and they are growing every year by about 12 miles. They survive the winter just fine.

We have a huge wild population here in Australia. When swine flu gets here it will travel like wildfire. We are lucky we are an island and fairly isolated but somehow everything seems to get here eventually.

I have already been doing my part by rationing pork. Bacon once or twice a week and ham on Easter.

Heard that the Chinese are trying to replace some pork with the other white meat - - chicken.

Hard to understand what we are going to do with the corn and bean surplus w/o hogs to eat it. I would not be plowing up pastures just yet because calf prices are low in September.
