Supposed a person bought a "Water" well drilling rig and started making their own wells without notifying the local Health Dept if you have one. How much trouble do you think you would be in for drilling lets say about 10 wells just for pastures ? Just wondering

Yes sorry should have specified i keep forgetting about oil wells and various others

Just tell them its a fancy post driver. Or your drilling for oil and struck water, or just make sure its out of site and do whatever you want to. I can drill a shallow well anywhere for livestock or watering the garden with out a permit.

Good point here you have to pay 400 bucks per well permit each well drilled requires a permit on top of what the well costs.

check you local regs but I would almost bet that a 4" or less shallow well for irrigation or livestock falls in the no permit required section. I can diy a shallow well on my property without a permit . It is classified as a non potable water well. I have one old shallow well that is only 20' and has never ran dry to my knowledge.

I will call the county tomorrow I think health department closes at 430.

I am asking cause I would like a few more wells and a neighbor as well and at 6k a pop 10 would get real expensive quick lol I will gladly pay a 800 buck fine fee per well for all of them lol

The rules will vary by county and state. But the rule is if you do it on a weekend and the neighbors don't complain there is no permit required. That rule applies nationwide.

I've put three down on my property myself. Inspector got really upset and got ugly with my wife on the phone so I wanted his head. I called the head dude over the well regulations and he told me I did not need a permit to dig one on my own property if I did it myself. This is america and you can did as deep a hole as you want but you cannot do it for other people without a permit. We no longer have that inspector.

You might want to look at "drillyourownwaterwell.com. Lots of good info there. I have been thinking about trying this just to see what would happen.

thanks I appreciate that.

Depends on if it is solely a drill rig or a drill and well service rig.
The mast for drilling only has to be as tall as the individual drill pipe used are long.
Could be as short as a 5' long pup joint or as long as a 31' drill stem. Depends also on the diameter hole being drilled.

My b-i-l has one of those do-it-youself drill rigs. The "mast" is about 10' at the most. Drills down 5 or 6' before you have to set and add another joint. Drills hole for 4' casing max using a fishtail or rock bit--depending what the strata is downhole.

After the little girl fell in the old well out in Odessa Texas, the rules changed. The State wants to know exactly where every single private well in the state is, it's condition, diameter, and depth.

So, Sky, are you going to do it? If it is a short boom, park some equipment around the truck. Park that big John Deere combine in front of it and make a pile of hay. Then each time you start digging another well, just move everything with it. :lol2:
Tell everyone you are trying to decide if you want a new hay barn there or an equipment shed, so you are just moving everything to each spot until you get it figured out. :lol2:

Sky, of you are drilling these for cattle you can get them done for free. Including the waterline and tanks. DCR has it set up until next July 1 that all applications for cost share are funded at 100%. That includes the well permit. Talk to your local SWCD.
