The funeral thread got me thinking about the supersticious mind set that my grandparents had. Growing up in the very rural south I witnessed alot of supersticious actions to off-set bad luck. My grandfather and I would walk from his house to the backside of his farm everyday no matter the weather from the time I could keep up until I went to school. If a rabbit crossed the lane in front of us he would always turn his hat backwards for good luck. You could always tell by looking at his hat if a rabbit had crossed the road in front of him. My grandparents would never walk under a ladder either.....said it was bad luck.....not sure why. Black cats were also bad news. My grandfather had personal supersticions too. He named every dog he ever owned either Bob or Spot. Those were his two best dogs as a little boy so ever dog for the next 90 years got named Bob or Spot. He either got a dog with a bobbed tail (hence the name Bob) or it had a spot on it somewhere of a different color (hence the name spot). He got a Fiest dog once that had some spots and a bobbed tail and he named it Spot. Being just a little boy I asked why he picked Spot. He thought for a moment and said....you are right.....from now on his name is Spotty Bob :cowboy:

Our knives hang from the belt; they can neither be opened nor closed, problem solved.

I'm biting my lip and sitting on my hands now, Anazazi.....

always salute a Magpie, and ask after his wife and family....not sure why something I've been taught.
never cross a knife and fork...and if you drop a knife tread on it first before picking it up, if there is no-one else there to pick it up for you.
I never walk under a ladder, not 'cause of bad luck...in case something falls on my head, or knock off the poor person on it.
Black Cat ones don't bother me as I have always got a Black Cat...so I'd be in a bad state all the time.
if I come back into the house turn around three times and sit down before going out again.
never put up a brolly in the house.
Throw a pinch of salt over the left shoulder if it is spilt.
If a mirror get broken wrap it in news paper and then smash it into tiny pieces.
OMG I sound a real sad sack here. stooooooooooooooop, I think I need to get out more.

My Italian family was very surersticious. Mostly having to do with the Evil Eye(Mal Occhio) or the curse (Faschinate). I have actually seen written spells from Southern Italy determined to be used to break the spell or defeat the eye.

My grandfather believed that the Mal Occhio was caused by envy and that if soemone was envious of something you had they could actually damage it with the EYE, he had a neighbor who he swore was envious of his yellow Herf bull. Everytime he drove up the lane it was my aunt Josephine's job to run out and tie a yellow ribbon on the bull before the neighbor could inflict the mal occhio on him and damage him somehow.

They also used to tell us stories of the witches in Calabria but I think most of that was just to keep us scared shytless so we would behave......BTW it very rarely worked we ended up scared and ornery. There were many nights that I prayed myself to sleep under the picture of the Pope begging him not to let the witches get me or let me go to he[[ for misbehaving.

I don`t really believe in anything much like that. A black cat had to be some color... And how could a rabbit`s foot be lucky when the rabbit lost it? Have you ever seen a smiling three legged rabbit?

Was all that smoking before, during or after your praying time to the pope?
