In June of this year it came out that some hackers got into a federal database and stole a bunch of personal information. I just received notice that I'm one of the lucky one's affected by this security breach. Though they say they haven't seen where this information has been used for any harm; my photo, fingerprints and other personal information are in the hands of someone who shouldn't have it and this bothers me a little.

Anyone else have their stuff information stolen?

Anyhow, they say that HLS and the FBI are working together to resolve this and they have automatically provided me and my immediate family with identity theft insurance as well as an identity restoration service and they are also offering credit monitoring and identity monitoring for the next three years if I so desire but I'm sure this will require some paperwork and that, I think, is what created this mess.

Anyhow, I called the OPM to ask a few questions but typical to any federal agency the wait time was horrific so I gave up on that. I then went to their website to see what I could find there but needed to sign in using a 25 character PIN number they assigned me but, like ObamaCare, this website doesn't work either.

Kindof pizzed. Wasted enough time on this I think. Should I blow it off and hope for the best or make the extra effort to get this additional coverage?

I got the same notice. A big thank you to the federal government for requiring me to give them all that information and then not protecting it. To this point I haven't even tried to do anything. So Joe you are at least one step ahead of me.

The government is going to have to send DHS and the ATF to your place just to make sure you are you. I wonder if they can get DNA samples from fingerprints? I don't think I'd blow them off myself, getting set up by the government would really stink.

Dave I beg to differ with you. Your not doing anything put you about two steps ahead of me because I just wasted a good hour talking to them on the phone.

To summarize what I learned, if you recently received this letter then there are PIN number errors and most if not all the pin numbers do not correspond with database. So if you go to sign on and it doesn't work then there is no need to try again and again like I did. Basically they screwed up. Good thing is you are already enrolled in two of the services so you don't need to do anything unless you want the monitoring. If you want that, and you cannot use the PIN they gave you, and you are unwilling to give your SS number to some stranger on the phone, you can go to their website and request a new letter which will take 4-6 weeks to get to you.

I don't know what I'm going to do. Spent half my day messing with both the state or federal government.

I was in the breach at homie de pot a couple years ago . I signed up for the free id theft protection from them. It was easy and worked.When I bought the rtv they called me several times to make sure I was opening an account.

No, first you need to hire someone to find all the races in the woodpile so to speak. Someone somewhere back in your history had to have fooled around somewhere. If they didn't that's why you have a specialist hired, if they say so it must be. Then you will be able to get somewhere with .gov. You also need to change genders.

Wise words. After talking to my son last night it turns out he has top tier grades and all things being equal he should be able to get any surgical internship in the country but because he is not a minority he might not get admitted in the program of his choice. Where is that white privilege when you need it?

(BTW - not looking for sympathy or anything like that because I know he will do fine its just frustrating that affirmative action has made such inequality in our country)

I'm not sure exactly what he said or the context of how he said it, only heard a glint of it. What I do know is affirmative action is wrong and goes against the very essence of equality. For someone to be given extra points or preferential treatment due to the color of their skin or their gender or nationality is just wrong for isn't that the same as saying they are not equal? That they are somehow inferior? That they somehow are beneath a young man who happens to be white?

If I told someone they could have a head start in a footrace because they were black or a female, everyone and their brother would call me a racist or a male chauvinist but isn't that exactly what we are saying when we give extra points and lowering the standards for certain people? Just makes no sense to me but like I say my son will do fine its just he's going to have to work harder to get what he wants because the game is rigged against him in many ways. Even tiny ways like using the zerox machine. He has to pay while the minority students don't. Someone want to talk about white male privilege?

What's even sadder is 30% of the minorities in his first year class failed BUT they would not fail them - this wouldn't be PC. Instead they put them through the system again. Re-processed them so to speak. Just think about this for a minute and consider how many potentially deserving students were denied admission because these people were "reprocessed" and again the number who were further denied due to the new minorities they accepted due to this nonsense. Makes absolutely no sense to me. Same people calling Scalia a racist would surely call me a racist for sharing this opinion but I don't consider he nor I racist because I'm not. I don't care what color, nationality, gender, cross-gender, sexual orientation a person is as long as he is the best. I don't want someone cutting on me or my loved one's just because they are considered a minority. Its madness.

Shyt, while I'm on my tirade, why don't we just apply this every child a winner mentality to the presidential race and let all the candidates become president? They all win! With all of them in office maybe nothing will get done and the country will probably be the better for it.

But in regards to surgery candidates, think of being the victim, I mean patient of one of the surgeons passed along not making the grade.


Thomas Sewell I think had an article of such. He taught at Cornell I believe. Said something like half of the minority population was in academic trouble. He said it wasn't fair to them. I think they averaged top 25% of the population. But when the rest of cornell are top 1%, there is a big drop off, and they were not succeeding where they would have almost any where else. It isn't a race thing. Take the 25% percentile general population and choose any race, they can't compete with the top 1% and the pace they can understand material.

Now which surgeon do you want? The best, or mediocre. At some point there will be additional racial implications. Many people may not be able to judge the competency of a professional, but they may learn that there is a 50:50 chance of quality with someone just on color alone.
