We purchased a brahman cross heifer last saturday and had her penned up in our corral. Well behind our corral we have a lot where we keep our horse. When we let the heifer out yesterday she would not pair up with the cows and all she wanted to do is be with the horse... Shes about 450 pounds. Anybody ever seen this? she has no interest in the other heifers even with them eating on the other side of the fence.
 
A bunch of years ago I had a steer that was 'best buddies' with one of my horses. After he was weaned (the calf) he buddied-up with my gelding. On occasion, they would share the same feed pan, when I would give them a "treat".

I'd never had any that did that previously, nor have I had any do that since.

I do not have that gelding anymore, nor do I have that steer-----we ate him (but not the horse ;) )

Eventually your heifer will join the herd. As long as the horse isn't trying to hurt her, I wouldn't worry about it. Not all horses get along well with cattle.

I will bet that she will eventually join the other heifers. I would be curious also to know if she had been with a horse.

I have two horses and a donkey that get a full licking from a cow every evening! (Not all my horses do this.) But these 3 have learned to talk the cows into a full grooming! I have one gelding that will straddle a cow laying down just to get his belly licked. It really is quite funny. What's funny is, the cows seem to enjoy it just as much!

I have a goat that was raised with horses. When I put her in with other goats she ran from them. She wanted nothing to do with them, ever! She lived with the horses. I showed her in a mirror that she looked like a goat too, but she wouldn't except that! :lol:
 
I do not believe she was raised with the horse. Problem we are having now is she has gone through the fence to be with the horse. Maybe she should go? Or maybe not buy just one next time?

I just saw this after I wrote the above. Yes, I have always found it better to have two. Can you pen another calf up with her, to buddy up with?
 
The heifer finally partnered up last night. So excited about the new herd of all my brahman cross heifers. They are so beautiful to watch as they graze. Turned on Chris young and let the tailgait down last night and watched them get to know one another. Need about 10 more to add to the 10 we have and we will be doing good.
 
Yeah! I had though maybe it had imprinted on horses before you got it. Usually they will get the picture given time but sometimes instinct takes time. We hatched a bunch of duck eggs under a banty hen ones. Poor old girl dam near went nuts when they went down to the pond for water and the ducklings just took off across the pond iwth her runiing back and forth on the bank.

:lol: Dun we did the same thing to an old turkey hen once. She ran up and down the creek bank after those ducklings!

We truly were stumped she hopped the fence to be with her. All is well now shes been worked given her tag and is doing great. I think she didnt know she was a cow for a bit it seemed like she was having an idenitity crisis.
