Went to the stockyard sale today in Livingston, Alabama and it was amazing at the prices of cattle there today. They were having a herd dispersal of 150 commercial brood cows (4 years old & up) that were mostly beefmaster/charlais crosses and purebred charlais. These cows were all heavy bred (6-8 months) and they brought on average from $1000.00 to $1300.00 each. There were a few thinner cows that brought a little less but overall they were high. They were high but they were good cattle too. I went looking for some black angus type cows that were heavy bred or black cow/calf pairs in this dispersal sale but there were only a few there. Those were either old or in bad shape. Hard to find what I am looking for around here. Folks that have em' don't want to let go of them.

I'm glad for the farm that was selling out to have gotten those kind of prices. Remember, this was at a sale barn. Really suprised me.

Hads to unload a group of calves that I normally would have kept till late Feb or Mar.... Mixed group of heifers and bull calves, 5 wieght to 6 weight calves... Brought $110 to $125 a pound. Normally I sell this group to a order buyer, but with the lack of rain my ryegrass is not gonna make it. By the way these were brangus type cows crossed with good LIMOUSIN bulls, they were not worked in anyway. They brought just as much or more than calves that had been worked.... With the price of calves right now, unless you are gonna sell em to a order buyer or retain ownership it makes no sense to work em... Of course in a couple of years you may have to shampoo the suckers before you can sell em.

Herd dispersal sales typically bring better money for cows. Mainly because the cows are proven and you can pretty much bet they are keepers. Sometimes folks feel sorry for the seller having to shut down and pay a little more also.

Same way here... this past tuesday the Fruitland auction barn had a 150 head herd dispersal and short sholids in 2nd/3rd period were bringing 800 (last month they were 400-600) and zero's (older than s/s but younger than bm) were 800 as well.

Normally this sale barn is 20-30 cents cheaper by the pound but not this past week.

Which county is this fruitland in. There are 2, one in greene and one in cape girardeau. Or maybe there's another one I don;t know about. MO seems to have a lot of places with the same names.
I ooked up Oak Ridge and there are 4 of those.

Around here at some of the sale barns 12-1300 pound cows are bringing anywhere from 12-1700 dollars a piece. Especially if they are bred.

Is this for replacements heifers or just some bred cows running through the market? If it is just bred cows, I may need to haul some up there.

Dun - sorry for the delay, been gone all day.

This was Fruitland in Cape Girardeau county. Its about 5 miles from me.

Just got back from the market here. Had whole herd sell out, mostly black and bwf angus and simm cross cattle. The pairs brought 1200 to 1350 mostly. They were in fair shape, fairly young cows. Most of the heavy breds bought around 850 to 1000. The 1-4 months brought 650 to 900. Decent cattle but needed worming and groceries.
