Hi Gang,
Been a while since I've posted on here but I am looking for some opinions. Full disclosure, this is a show heifer we are looking at breeding next spring. She's out of Full Tilt (Maine, Chi) and an angus cow. She's got a hairy vulva. My experience with this is that they are extremely hard breeders. We had one a few years back that we AI'd twice and she never took but did end up breeding back to a bull (which we do not have anymore).

My question is, what would you guys think is the stickiest semen out there? I would prefer to breed her to a show type bull but I am not too awful concerned about breed on this one just getting her bred the first time. The bull would have to be calving ease obviously. I debated on putting this in the Show Cattle board but I thought I would try here first. I appreciate your input!
 
In my experience;If you want something to really stick breed her to something that you really don’t want. White park, Dexter, Highlander, or Long Horn all come to mind. Heck you probably could just throw Jersey semen at her and she’d stick. 🤣

Seriously though any bull that freezes well should be fine. Breed her twice and maybe a shot of Cystorelin.
 
Yeah I would love to have access to a bull for this one but we it just doesn't make any sense for us to have one. Small herd and multiple people who can AI for us. I have more AI people than bulls in a 50 mile radius to be honest. I will give her a couple chances and if she wont breed she will just wind up in our freezer. Looking for specific bulls to use.
 
Used Connealy Restore on a heifer and a young cow last year, and just bred 3 more heifers to him this year. Calves came easy, even a set of twins. I had no problems getting heifers bred, and I am not the best at AI'ing either. Impressed with their attitudes, at birth and after. This is a Restore heifer out of a Baldridge Gibson at 4 days of age. She has surprised me how much she has grown. I would use a 7 day CIDR protocol on her. breed her 12 hours after observed standing heat and repeat AI 18 hours after first AI service. give a shot of GNRH when you first see standing heat. use a good reputable AI tech or someone that you know has good AI experience with good conception rates. just because someone has been breeding AI for a long time doesn't necessarily mean they are good at it.
 
Had a fall show heifer last year heck of a time getting bred. She was obviously fat. And getting hauled alot. Ai 3 times. Then it took bull 2 cycles. Show heifers can be tough. Had a spring last year got first try. But it was right before was going hard. Good luck they can be different

We always do a 7 day CIDR protocol. I will guess she will not show any visable signs of heat. Her mother never does either. But she's bred everytime when we time breed her. My AI guy breeds cows for a living. I think a lot of our success has had to due with how good he is. It's not him I worry about.

For sure. I ran into a guy last night that we bought a show heifer off of a few years back. Presented him with the same question. He said he really likes Capone for sticking and getting some show look. We may go this route.

Curious, were you able to get her bred?
