What are the advantages/disadvantages of automatic over stick in a diesal dually used for pulling tractor and trailer, hay ect?

I managed to strip the tourque converter out of my re-manned heavy duty Jasper automatic transmission twice. Just hauling half a load of show calves down the interstate. Jasper wouldn't back their product.
Got sick of having the tow truck on speed dial.

Put a 5 speed in it last winter, not problem one.

I like the 5 speed cause mother in law can't drive it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 2001 F-150 automatic that at 120,000 miles is on second transmission and the overdrive sensor just went out. My 94 F-250 manual diesel has 260,000 miles and I haven't had one problem out of transmission.

I pulled for many years with a 5 speed manual behind a diesel. It was great. Granny gear could get just about anything moving. I now pull with a 5 speed auto. Time will tell if it will hold up.

We pull w/ a 5 sp auto. Routinely drag payloads in excess of 15K over some fairly hilly ground. Change the fluid and filter religiously (every year). Had an extra cooler and a temp guage installed. Heat is a killer. Had a pump rebuilt and some valves replaced ($450) at 95K mi , but other than that OK at 196K mi.

Well, I did say hills, not mountains. Also it's uphill both ways to the hay fields.

Forgot to ask so I'll edit it in, did you get any rain this weekend or was it all east of you?
