Well next year I have two options

show my heifer and a lamb (one from my own ewe)
or Show my heifer and a steer

I am most likely getting a steer. I have feed 3 lambs so far and have 2 ewes to start breeding club lams, both where shown by me.
I have learned a tremendous amount about feeding, raising, and selecting sheep. I could learn more but I feel I could gain more from raising a steer.
If I show a steer I will sell me ewe's lambs and help the kids raise them.

In my name its obvious I like angus and I would like to show an angus steer. My teacher has warned me though that when I get to majors my steer better look like an angus, moo like and angus, poop like and angus, smell like an angus etc. to get through.

I would mainly be looking for the best steer for my money

after all that babbling

what are good steer feeds

what are good steer feeding techniques?

also I will need help along the way.

My teacher recently got married but her husband lives about an hour and a half away from her so she is leaving our school.

she will help me find and select my steer and I can call her anytime once she has left but it won't be the same.

im sure other ag teachers would be willing to help me but I think I will needs lots of help

also Jaydill, might not be best to tell everyone she is leaving, she told all of us and everyone in her classes but you know.

wow I rambled alot but I am definetly excited about possibly getting a steer

Steer feeds:
HiPro
Acco

Up at the school barn, as you know, most of us have been feeding that HiPro and it worked for all the exotic/british calves. Acco is decent but I only switched to it because it wasn't working for Bam...I'm also the only one who had an American calf and the only one who the feed didn't work for. According to the teacher that left last year, she always fed MFM and also had the Champion Simbrah Steer at the state fair from the same breeder I got mine from. I'm sure part of it will depend upon the breed although IMO, I think you should try HiPro.

where do you guys live? Keep me in mind when your looking for some calves. I sell plenty in all price ranges and I sold a steer that won Johnson county (hillsboro) this year.

Senorita is obviously not a guy.

Am I reading ya'lls post right and ya'll have a SCHOOL BARN...I wish we had one that would be great for the kids that do not have a place to keep a calf.

If you're going to show straight Angus, you should join the American Angus Assn. Otherwise, they will not be competitive. An Angus x Maine, cross usually works the best. Research the feeds. I think if you have an elevator nearby, you can work up your own mixture. Save a lot of money.

Acco or HiPro will be a good choice. Jay, you only have to feed one bag of MFM to get recognized as feeding it.
What? :?: We had a teacher last year who showed for a Simbrah breeder (same one I got my calf from) who fed MFM all four years and all four years took shows with them. The Simbrah steer she had senior year took Champion Simbrah at the Texas State Fair...and was fed the same thing; MFM. I'm sure it works better for some breeds than others. IMO, I think you should go with HiPro, Senorita.

lol yeah I saw in the showbow that the grand steer was fed both hi-pro and mfm I woundered how that happened

We switched from mfm to hi-pro after the state fair, mfm is a least cost ration meaning they change it up and it was to inconsistant for our animals, most of the time it was way to dry

I don't know what 6M is talking about, but joining the AAA isn't going to make you more competitive.
I don't think 6M knows what he/she is talking about either.

I don't think MFM is the highest quality feed out there but it does work for some animals. Like I said, in the case of the Simbrahs, it worked. Again...I still recommend HiPro for your steer. It seemed to work best with the british and british cross calves we had.

You need to join the AAA so that you can show a registered Angus steer. Any of the shows we've been to, will not let you show unless they're registered. Otherwise, they will place it with the crossbred steers.

Here in Texas, steers don't need to be registered and people won't know whether your calf is registered or not unless you tell them. I kinda wish steers had to be registered...we'd stop having some of those AOBs sneaking into the Angus classes.

I'm just saying that HiPro and Acco require a calf to be fed the feed all year long to quailify for rewards and recognition. You only have to feed one bag of MFM to meet requirements.
I see. The teacher fed MFM all year though. I dunno if their quality was better back then or not but it worked for her. Cowboy, have you ever fed HiPro? Or always Acco?
