Spent the day working on equipment. All sorts of neat and intriguing mechanical puzzles I had the joy of solving. Invented a few new words to boot. Between all of these wonderful things I even found time to roll a few bales of hay. I'm so glad Al Gore missed this global warming thing cause it could have been a lot worse because some idiot didn't think to leave the first shade tree in the hayfield.

Jo dont feel bad im gonna have to buy a baler by thursday or friday morning if the guy that is supposed to bale my hay doesnt get his belts replaced on his baler by end of the week. its kinda crazy for me to have a cutter rake and no baler thats like getting dressed up to go on a date and you dont have someone to go with.

Skyhightree - lots of people cut and rake their own then pay someone else to bale it so they dont have to maintain the extra equipment. In my area its $25 a bale to cut and bale or $12 a bale if all they are doing is baling it. If you arent making a lot of bales on a regular basis this makes perfect sense. Or at least in my opinion it does.

It was clover and ryegrass. I had gone over the baler last year and re-strung the belts and had everything in perfect working order - or so I thought. Had some linkage problems, timing problems and had to adjust the clutch on the pickup. She's ready for some more now but it was frustrating.

Before I scraped my baler last year I was making around 480 bales a year so I am kinda not sure whether to buy a baler or pay him he charges 7.00 a bale just to bale. It sure would save me alot of time to be on CT instead of rolling hay

If I had someone who would come when I needed them and bale for $7 per roll I'd let them do it but I don't know of anyone who is that reliable.

Maybe I am too nice. I agreed to help a friend a couple of years ago. He had acquired some land free of charge and needed someone to make the hay on it. The land was within a mile of my house so I agreed to help him out. We talked it over and came to an agreement where i mowed, raked, and baled for$9 per roll and I keep everything over 100 rolls. Well I made the hay and it came to 160 rolls. He of course needed a trailer to haul it on so I agreed to let him use my gooseneck for $1.00 per roll. Thus the total bill comes out to $10 per roll X 100= $1000. Well a couple of months go by and still no money. Finally at Christmas I am doing a presentation at his workplace and I hit him up for the money. He says "what?". I said the money for the hay I made for you. He says that he doesn't owe me anything because he arranged for the land. I said yes you did for "free". He then said that you got 60 rolls for payment. I said no, anything over 100 rolls was mine upon agreement. Needless to say no more friendship and on his behalf he has managed to pay me 500 dollars. That was over a year ago. Oh and by the way he is a millionaire. I guess some people get rich by stepping on whoever whenever they need something. I forgot to mention that he tore my GN up by pulling the wiring out by forgetting to unhook it from the truck. I am pretty picky on who I deal with anymore when it comes to hay.

I thought this was going to be about a fire suppressor system you installed..
:hide:

:lol2:  :lol2: Do you actually think this could ever happen again? (note to self: price pvc pipe)

I agree, $7/roll is way too cheap. I don't like doing hay but I like the flexibility it gives you and not having to be dependant on someone else's schedule. Getting the weather to cooperate is bad enough.

Contracts sure are lovely... I do nothing without a contract even with my family I have had same issues basically as you had.

if your going to custom bale you need to run new equipment.an go through the equipment in the off season to keep it field ready.some breakdowns cant be helped but you can do everything you can to stop them.
