Saw a program on RFD about them last night. Anyone care to share opinions on the cattle?

Starlake is doing a good job with their cattle. A couple of years ago their focus seemed to be more toward herdsire production, but their female program has really started to come on strong. We had anticipated going to the sale, but couldn't fit it in our schedule. There are several cows that we really like. They also have a great junior program

It looked like they had good udder quality and nice bulls on the show. It also looked like their feed truck driver is working overtime.

114 views and only one reply. That ought to speak volumes.

My lack of a reply was because I agreed with farmwife's post and I didn't have much to add to it.

Although I've never seen their whole herd, I know Star Lake has some really good cattle. I've bid against them in several auctions that I've attended and I have always lost. When Star Lake acquired the Ankony cattle, I think they placed themselves into a position of being one of the elite herds in America, if they weren't there already. An example is those Baker bred Line 1 cows that Ankony bought in the Rock Creek Dispersion and Star Lake ended up with them.

I also sent in bids for 3 lots in Star Lake's spring sale, but was outbid on all of them. The only complaint I have is that my pockets aren't deep enough!

"female program"

Does that mean they just advertise more about females?

"herdsire production"

Are they somehow figuring out genes that make herdsires vs females?

Or is this just purebred producer BS?

Nevermind, I think I know the answer.

I've always seemed to notice their herd sires don't say in herds for extended periods of time. Seem to get moved after a couple of years. I think they more about frame size. Anybody know any sizeable herds based on Starlake females?

they do have nice "looking" cattle, but I wouldn't ever buy one that was their genetics. That is just my opinion, and probably not worth much

As you know I am not sizeable but I do have several Star Linemans daughters, I love the cross with a BG1. I have retained all the heifers from that cross grow some kick ass calf's.
I recently purchased a Vindicator bull to put on those heifers.

I agree -- I really like the Ankony cattle.

I have always wondered why for the most part their name only extends into the 2nd generation of most of their cattle if they are such a good program. And why do they sell so many cattle that they had bought at other sales, I guess I question if you are really buying their genetics (or even if they have a "their" genetics). What are some of your opinons on this. I am trying not to bash anything, just asking a question.

It is all the big boys trading funny money. What you spend at my sale, I will spend at yours so we can trade cows and hook a few suckers into spending too much on the rest.

Valid point. Thinking back, I remembered that the three lots that I sent bids on in their Spring Sale were originally from Red Hills, DeShazer, and one was a Larson heifer. Only the calves would have been from Star Lake breeding.

I agree that it's hard to see where they are trying to go when you look at their herd bull battery. Recent herd bull acquisitions, like Pounder, GitRDone, and Reload point toward a desire to intensify and linebreed the Remitall genetics. Then others, like Eureka and the two Double U bulls are complete outcrosses to most of their cattle.

Their promotional releases indicate their goal is to work on moderating size and birth weights while retaining/improving the performance and carcass traits. Goals most everyone should be working toward, I suspect.

I'm one that believes that linebreeding is necessary to set in those traits that you are breeding for, so it's easy to figure out what part of their program interests me.
