Never heard of it. What is it.

I could easily be mistaken, but I believe it's just a sort of trade name used by folks that cross Gerts with Herefords, and I believe they refer to the resulting heifers as Star 5's. (Of course, the progeny of that cross approximates a Beefmaster, albeit with more British and less Brahman influence). Look up one of the ads here on CattleToday by Dr. Borchers from down around Victoria, I believe his add banner is something like Southern Y Ranches, for pictures of some of his Star 5 heifers.

You're right...it's a hereford x gert. Can resemble something of a beefmaster but will do better in American classes due to the greater british influence. I'm thinkin our county will start seeing a few of em next year. One of the girls in my FFA is getting one.

The girl in my FFA that's gettin one told me it's a gert x hereford. Maybe she was just talkin about the one she's lookin at. In any case, anyone have any experience with them? I know they're fairly new but I'm curious about them.

Star 5 is a recorded percentage Gert with any other breeds in the mix.

From someone who knows.

My Favorite by the way is Gert Simmental.

He is a 4 year old purebred Bull....

I did have a web site with oodles of percentage gerts but My web provider went out of business and I haven't got motivated yet to find another.

If you pm me your e-mail address I can send you some pics and descriptions.

Once again bward is bang on with the Gert info. Have you guys recorded any of your Star 5 cattle yet? We are thinking of recording a bull this spring if he keeps looking the way he is now. Ross wont be impressed because it's Black. I have the latst gainbtest to send you as well

Actually TK, we have been recording all our retained percentage gerts since 1994, and SGBI did it without a fee. When I started recording daughters of those first crosses they started to charge a fee and issue a 5 star certificate. Darn.

You can record a percentage bull. My all time favorite percentage bull was a 3/4 and was as mild as a lamb and kind to the cows... a gentleman in every way. And yes, horrified people, I scratched him every chance I got. I used him on a few gert crosses and some non gert cows but only retained a few of his female offspring. They ended up with bizarre percentage numbers like 67% or 28% or something like that. I cried when we shipped him at age 7. I loaded him in the trailer for his last ride and I am sure he thought he was going to go breed some cows. Talk about your ultimate betrayal. I still feel like a heel.

I told Ross about your black bull and after vocalising a few words I cannot mention, " traitor" comes to mind. heh heh

Let me Knaow what you think

Wow...lots of hair. He does look short bodied and maybe like he's lacking a little in the rear (though it could be the angle) but I do really like him. Thanks for the picture. :D I think I kinda like that gert x black angus cross.

I'll post some gert pics with there winter coats on Not as sleek and smooth as down south
