I have this friend that purchased some property down the road from me. She told me this story about having 100 calves just seperated from thier moms, in a coral. She came out of the screen door (one of those screen doors with the springs on them) and the door slamed shut. Those calves went nuts from the sudden sound, knocked down 3 fences and one of them died running into a tree trunk. She said it was terrible. She was their because of her boyfriend. After mending the 3 fences she would rather not do it again lol.

You might be surprised at the fences a bunch of spooked weaning calves can take down/go through. ;-)

If you read the post again you will see that "she" was visiting her boyfriend,therefore he needed a better system.Also it seems to me the animals are wayyyyyyyyy tooooooooo close to the house if they can here the screen door close.I was thinking more along the line of Peeww!The cows are to close to the house if she is serious about the guy she needs to do lot's of "cleaning house".
If it is a true story don't know why it was posted with a LOL at the end ;one dead calf is one too many.

I agree, but I've also seen a 1200lb angus cow bounce off our woven wire head-on at full speed. Looked like someone smacked her with a tennis racket. :lol:

:lol: :lol: In this particular scenario, it seems to me that whether they were too close to the house or not would depend on the weather at the time of this particular occurance - noise tends to travel much farther (and tends to be much more defined, and amplified) in cold weather than warm. Having never lived in Texas, I don't know how much of a factor that might have been in this stampede. As far as the dead calf is concerned, I'm certainly not going to argue with you on that point.

No, not the wind velocity - I'm saying cold temps COULD have played a part in carrying the sound of the screen door slamming, and amplifying it enough to spook the calves and cause a stampede. Haven't you ever noticed how sound carries farther, and seems louder on clear, cold mornings? Add to that the fact that weaning/yearling calves have a tendency to freak over things that wouldn't phase other cattle, particularly when those calves aren't used to strange people being around - you know that as well as I do - and you've got the makings of a stampede. I don't know it for a fact, but I suspect it was intended to be a serious post.

It's happened at our place a couple times over the years and a few hundred calves running blind can wreck a fair amount of stuff. You don't know what really sets them off but it does happen.

it don't take much to set a fresh weaned calf off their stressed and on edge anyway. so it could be anything from strikin a match to lookin at em crosseyed. that sudden slam of the door set one off and the whole bunch followed suit

I guess I didn't post that in the context that I heard the story. I asked her if she wanted to help me build my fence, just kidding her. Then she told me the story. I giggled because I could see why she wouldn't ever want to build fence again. She has a different boyfriend now. I posted the thread because I thought it was a very interesting story.
