Coming back to the farm today, I saw the cow herd running full speed toward the headquarters. Hunting season opened today and my first thought was they were spooked by hunters who had come in from the back of the farm.

When I got up to the headquarters, here is what I saw, all the cows gathered at the gate:

I started walking back the ridge to determine the cause. First thing I saw was a large white bird walking alone on the ridge road. I got my binoculars and identified it as the white phase of the Blue Heron. I have never seen a white one here. My guess is neither had the cows!

According to the following, YES:

An egret is a bird that is any of several herons, most of which are white or buff, and several of which develop fine plumes (usually milky white) during the breeding season.
 
I had and injured pelican land in the pasture a few years ago. Pelicans fly over daily but I guess cows never look up. They sure were not happy about it being there. They would chase the pelican, then it would turn and chase them.
 
Anything they aren't familiar with is cause for excitement!

It is VERY rare that cows look up, but I've seen it happen once in a while

Interesting thought GB, after much thought I need assistance. Is two cows a herd or just a pair? Is three cows a herd? Are four head of cattle a herd? What if the four head were two cows with calves, would they be pair of pairs or a herd? I hope I can sleep tonight.
