I am ashamed to ask this but I don't fully understand the term, " a cow is springing." Now I can tell when one is getting close to partuition but I don't know what is meant by springing.

To be blunt, she is preparing to calve. The birth canal is enlarging, in all directions. Her rear end sort of "spings".

Ok, what is the diff between springing and freshening?

Fine line?

Good question Mosho, you haven't had the easiest ride in here, yet you keep coming back. With cattle questions. I respect that.

While growing up in my area, the condition of a cow leading up to calving was called "springing". This was manifested by the symptoms described by other posts above. "Freshening" was the actual process of having a calf and the milk flow beginning. In my childhood if we only had one family cow, we often looked forward to the milk as much as we did the calf. My 2 cents.

Thanks to everyone that responded. I am now clear on yet another mystery.
