Southern Thang?

When I was a kid my grandmother used to fix chocolate gravy and biscuits from scratch (yes with lard). My mother used to do it and still does on special occasions or if I request it. Is this just a Tennessee southern thang or does anyone else have memories of this very delicious treat?
How about dried apple or peach side pies? Man I sure miss my grandmothers backwoods cooking!

I believe they are the same thing. I have heard it called both fried and side. My grandparents used to dry their own apples out in the sun and then seal them in jars. Made those pies all winter......awesome!

Isn't it strange how things can be so regional. Growing up here in Tennessee I never had grits. I never ate grits until I got grown and had them in a restraunt in Illinois. People up there would always mention southern people eating grits but I never saw it growing up. I am sure there are plenty of Tennesseans that grew up on grits but in my area we didn't eat it. We did eat hominy corn which I never see anymore.

It's funny you mention grits because last time I was in TN I didn't see any grits either, but every Cracker Barrel, and Ryan's have them here.

I've lived in a rural part of western NC all my life, and I've never heard of chocolate gravy. Grits and fried pies, on the other hand, are a staple. And a fine one, done properly.

I grew up in western Oregon, mom's from Mississippi. I had to google "chocolate gravy" to make sure, but mom made it for us kids growing up only we put on waffles .... Of course I had to cover my waffle with peanut butter first. We just called it chocolate syrup but it's made the same way. Grand kids will be here for Easter, I know what grandpa making for breakfast one morning, thanks!.

born and raised in Virginia....never even heard of chocolate gravy.

have been know to eat a few grits.....

when I was young everyone made all kinds of pies....now all pies come from the grocery or the bakery....

progress does have it's drawbacks....I will say it again...I was blessed to see the zenith of this country....long enough to know that we have passed our high point.

Chocolate gravy is common here. Most cafe's and resteraunts serve it too.

Maybe because I grew up in VERY rural west Tennessee we shared some of the same culinary dishes as our Arkie neighbors????? :cowboy:

We had it growin up on special occasion. Ive had it in some of the arkie restaraunts and it was more like chocolate pudding. Ours was like a runny fudge. And we eat grits and pies. I always thought hominy was a northern thing. I never did like it. I dont know why though cause grits are made from hominy i think.
