we left home last night heading to Orlando for vacation, and driving through South Alabama this morning the grass looks awful short. is this typical for this time of year or is it just the type of grass there is down here?

Were you looking in yards, beside the road, pastures, if so were there cows in them. Bahia is our tallest grass, in my hay field it's probably over 2 feet tall right now but not close to that in the cow pastures. You will see mostly Bahia or Bermuda in most pastures this far south with some crabgrass fields. A lot of fields have just had the winter rye taken off in the last few weeks so it will be a few more weeks until the summer grasses mature. Most people try to get centipede grass in Thierry yards which is a short grass. Along the highways you may see a lot of cogon grass which is a very undesirable invasive species from China.

Plus we was very dry till last week. We've usually had a cutting of Bermuda grass by now but not this year. Still about 2 to 3 weeks away.

as we got closer to the Alabama border and into Florida the grass seem to get a lot better.
I guess I always figured that part of the world would be more lush, but its a lot like the southern half of SC which has the same type of sandy soil.

I just looked at the drought monitor and the small part of Alabama I commented on is still in a low level drought ...I guess that would answer my question.

Heath, what part of south Alabama were you traveling through. Most pastures look ruff here because it was dry last month, but now we are getting plenty of rain now so the grass is taking off.
