Some Alabama Corn

A shot of the row end of a corn field. Counted 4-5 ears on a few stalks. We'll see if there's enough rain to fill them out in the next few weeks................... About 8 feet tall now.

Looks good, To have good moisture and temps during pollination is very important.

4-5 ears?? Wow....corn around here grows tall but seldom has more than one ear to the stalk. Guess that's why 120 bu/acre is considered excellent.

How many gallons per acre will that make? Good looking corn.

I've seen a few fields here with 4 leaves. That is the best of the crop! It is raining again, so corn planting is probably finished. Beans will replace intended corn.

Surely that corn is under pivot irrigation. Just read in The Macon Telegraph yesterday that it takes $200/ac to fertilize and $200/ac to irrigate corn in Ga. this year. They didn't say how much it cost to plant or spray roundup on or combine. One corn farmer did say it took $1000 worth of diesel to fill his tractor one time.

Not irrigated. He got it in early (we had some rain until 3 weeks ago), late March-first April.

Thought the frost had burned it but it came out OK. Knifed in Anhydrous at layby.

Not Roundup Ready either. He put down Atrazine.

We are way behind this year. Our corn is about 8 inches tall. It's been a very weird spring. Been rainy all week and last night and today it's blowing a steady 35 mph with higher gusts, no sun. Forecast is no sun through Wed.
We can get 200 bushel corn here and we never have more than 2 ears per stalk. Maybe it's the variety?

Have a neighbor who plants a corn variety called "Six-Shooter" in his garden every year. It produces up to six ears per stalk on a very tall one. 12-14 feet.

It has been a very weird year here too. Spring started out wet and cool but is very hot and dry now.

Planted pumpkins yet? My melons are just starting to run.

Last three days here in Central Texas. Everyday is like living in Lubbock....35 mph winds with gusts up to 50 and never stopping with 96 temps. and 70 humidity....even at night the hot wind blows like a storm. Low last night was 80. Today is a little better but the crops are drying out in a hurry....the corn needs one more rain to "make the crop" and there is none in the forecast anytime soon.

I planted on May 6 and I'm once again replanting some things the field mice ate. (I think it's mice). They find certain varieties and eat every seed and leave others untouched. Must smell better.
