I actually made my own program in ms excel. It has all the fields I want and nothing I don't want. I can update anything I need to, anytime I want. I have a group page for each herd, an individual page for each cow/bull. I keep track of all vacinations, calving dates, calf performance, sale information. I have aprint out page for each herd that has all cows and corresponding calves so all I have to do is glace at it and know how old is that calf, or this calf. Who has a calf, who is due to calve, ect. I looked into some of the commercial programs and got a few ideas and built on that. If you are effecient in excel or access you can whip up your own database customized to what you want in no time.

I had written my own using COBOL a few years ago and really liked it, but I'm getting too old to enjoy the maintenance and changes that need to be made as newer stuff hits the industry. EID, added EPDs, etc. just made it too time consuming to mess with anymore.
You can download a free demo copy of cattlemax by cattlesoft and I think they'll even send a free CD. It's pricey, but it's worth it to me. Penny has answered every question and helped me resolve some rather bizarre application twists. Alwasy get an e-mail responce within a day and at times, the same day.

Well, I've never used COBOL that was before my time! I like messing around with my program though. It's not like I have a lot of spare time at home but on a rainy day it beats twiddling my thumbs. :lol:

COBOL is alive and well, for now at least. I'm still coding COBOL / CICS, but I need to get more efficient in web design.

It is alive and well for someone else then We have no use for it where I work. The only thing we use anymore is MPE/IX and I like to code my own webpages. Other then that we don't write much in the programming department.

not to be misleading at all though sidney... what you call programming and what i call programming are 2 different things... :nod: you are not even in my league... :shock: you probably couldnt even understand my level of programming... 8)

Funny! Trust me, my niche doesn't include programming. Those were some of my worst grades in college. I can get it done if I have to but I would much rather someone else write the hard coding to the programs I use. I don't really consider web coding "hard programming", So that way I can get away with likeing it :lol:

My old version of PC Cobol only runs on 6.2.2 and older. None of the windows DOS supports it. When I quit mantaining my COBOL version of cattle managment software myself I was finally able to retire my old 386 box.

(For everyone who, like me, doesn't know what in tarnation these 3 are talking about...I bet this is what some of the cattle newbies feel like when they come on board, and start reading about R-CALF, EPD's, embryo transfer, and, lol-alternative crops! Just a little insane revelation-pardon me for the interjection!) :nod: :lol2:

Is that something like a Commodore VIC 20. I think we used to program those in BASIC.
