I understand several folks are using special computer software to track genetics etc. Any suggestions? Is this worthwhile?
Thanks, Bob

We use Cattlemax from Cattlesoft. Well pleased with the product and the support

Dang, I looked at the prices and I am still trying to breathe!! I hate sticker shock. Dun, can I use your name and they give me a discount?

They'll probably charge you double. It is pricey, we have the small registered herd version, but it's worth the money to my mind. And you can write it off as an expense on your taxes. We've used in the past, multiplan, excel, quicken and a database system that I wrote myself. For the cow herd stuff, this beats the snot out of all of them.

He-he!!! I don't think I could stand the double Dun! Anytime I look at something new, it floors me to hear the price. I usually tell the first person that prices it to me that there is no way I could pay that price. Then as usual, I have to eat crow and go back to buy it from the first guy where I made such a fuss.
I am going to look more into it. They had a lot of ways to check the system out. I just didn't have time last night. I need to head back to the field now! Ahhhh, nothing like a summer vacation!! Cutting hay and silage. I am happy doing this. If someone told me that I could go on a cruise on my vacation, or bale hay and cut silage, I'd take the field any day.

Most of the software providers have a free evaluation copy that you can get and try out. What really sold me on cattlemax was that when I'ld have a question they were johnny at the rat hole to answer it and make suggestions on how to better use the software. After 2 years there are several of the compqanys that still haven;t responded to my inquirys, not that I expect them to, but they could have at least told me to go to ..... when I asked about stuff.

Bob,
I use one called MDI Cow-Calf Manager. It doesn't have everything the more expensive ones do but, it works well for me. You can check it out at their website.

We use Cattleworks for our small commercial herd. It has went up since we bought it, $75 I think now. Although they have done some updates and added some new features it lacks what some more higher programs have. It does most of the basics. I have heard some people complain about their support and we have only used them once, don't really remember but got a reply to e-mail in a day or two. They will send you a cd that is the full version and works for thirty days, also can be downloaded.

Brandonm, I always have to think about something before I buy it. Mostly if it goes over $200. I have the money, but I just have to make sure I can justify taking the money out of my pocket and putting it in someone elses. If I think about it long enough, and it stays with me, then I know that I really want it or need it. When I think about it for a short period of time and it fades away, then I was just entertaining the idea. Dreaming is a pass time. I have dreamed about many things that never came to be. I see so many young people buying anything that is on their mind at that moment. Some are making payments on their truck, wife's car, John Deere lawn mower, Harley Davidson Motorcycle, house, farm, fourwheeler, tractor, farm equipment, and farm. This is just one man too. They live from pay check to pay check. That scares the hell out of me.
Now to see figure out which category that the software fits in.

I have had a mortgage once (and that did not end very well). We don't owe anything on our land, house, or farm equipment (other than yearly taxes) and I intend to keep it that way. Of course, that means that to get anything I want I have to sell something (land, stocks, timber, etc) or work to make the money. I will never become rich by being "TIGHT"; but I sleep a lot better.

I hear a lot of GOOD things about the big price cattle software. I wrote my own cattle program on a series of blank Microsoft Works spreadsheets. That will do everything I ever need a cattle records program to do and I had the whole herd on a program I wrote on Basic ~20 years ago on my Commodore Computer; but having done a dozen spreadsheets I can see where just buying the software for $75 or more probably is worth it.

I look at it as a return on investment. I use a program I created myself. It does everthing I want. The bought ones will not do exactly what I want. They are prettier but heck all I'm after is the numbers and end results. It would take a while for a bought software to pay for itself in my case. I have a spread sheet for each animal. I fill out that info and reports are automatically done as well as ratio's and herd managment reports. At the end of the year I have all the infomation ready for tax time automatically.
