I started way back with a Brinkman charcoal smoker. Did not like it. Too much work feeding it during long smokes.

Then I went to Brinkman electric smokers. These little guys were great, except they burned out the element almost once a year and it cost almost as much as a new smoker. I had maybe four of these and went through 5 or 6 elements. They did a good job. Mine was bigger than this, but it looks like Brinkman quit making them.

Then I got one of these. A Masterbuilt gas smoker. It was ok, but just did not smoke as well as that Brinkman electric.

I am going back to electric and am considering this. Anyone have one? I am afraid I'll have the element problem all over again. I wish someone cared about building things to last.

Here's what you're looking for. Obviously, a little more expensive that the Chinese wal mart and bass pro junk, but not much and from all I've read, well worth the difference. I have a cabinet style propane wal mart one that hasn't rusted completely in two yet, so I'm still using it. But just as soon as it falls apart I'm buying one of these.

I been thinking about this guy. I am trying to talk myself out of it.

HDRider,
Wife bought one of the Masterbilt's like you posted pic of. Got it last fall so can't say how it holds up long term yet.

Bought my son one of these and it seemed to work pretty well. I do remember he had an issue with something on it but it wasn't much to fix.

I sent them an email, they said it was "custom made to their specs" in China.
Dang, It being American-made just about put me over the edge to buy it. Seems like nothing is made in the USA anymore that the average guy might buy.

Why don't you just build one yourself?
I would like to. I have so many things going on right now I will have to get by with a purchased one.

I would have to equip myself, which I plan to do, but not just now.

For the sake of time...

Anyone ever told you that you need to re-evaluate your priorities? ;-)

Keep looking, I'm sure you can find something American made but may have to pay a few bucks more. I try to avoid all things made in China. Got to buy American made if we're going to survive.

I have a Masterbuilt just like you pictured. Works fine. I used to use a charcoal, side box type rig too. Too much babysitting for me. I like to get this one to temp, put water soaked chips in until it won't take any more. When it just starts smoking put the meat on. Thirty min or so later, cram it full of chips again, set timer, and leave it. Don't wrap meat, don't baste, nothing. Puts a good bark on too, which surprised me. I really like it.
