Whats the best way to utilize 40 Ac. for the use of cattle also will be bringing in feed all Ac can be irrageted during the dry season and stays green in the winter months

If I had 40 acres of irrigated land, I'd put it in hay production. Irrigated land is too valuable here to raise cattle on. JMO

Canal/water district or pump irrigation? Pump irrigation would be pretty pricey. Maybe alfalfa would make you some money. Either that or lease it real high to someone. I don;t recall much alfalfa in that area, but it's been a while, seems like it was all row crops, vineyards or orchards.

I got a Canal
So my best case senerio is keep my animals in a smaller corral and dry lot them?

That would work. Or skip the cows and sell the alfalfa and buy a side of beef from a butcher.

Best bet to maximize profit on 40 acres is to stay out of cattle and do something else.

Too big a cost for the return.

Cash flow is the secret to small lots of land and cows do not provide it.

If you just gotta do cows, I can certainly understand it. What kind of fencing is on it, is the whole piece available for cows or is some of it wasted with stuff like a house and yard? Is it irrigated by flood irrigation? If it's flood, what is the frequnecy of the waer availability, and is the land set up to irrigate? Would it be possible to irrigate some of it and not irrigate another part when the cows are on the part you don;t want to irrigate? What is curretnly growing on the land? What kind of useage does the land around it have, cows, crops, almonds, raisens, etc.?
I don;t recall if you own the land, rent or lease it.

Own some land lease some land behind us
around us is a freeway to the front and almonds around us the land that we lease is ready for flood irrigation are land we got will get the job done water is availalbe from March- I belive Dec the grass stays green during the winter months and we have a total of 6 Pastures available and a smaller corral to dry lot them as I am right now currently oats is planted on our pasture and the lease property has perminate pasture of some sort

Since you have a drylot and the fencing is already in place, gradualy roate the current oat pastures to grass or maybe grazing alfalfa. Rotate the coes, look up MIG or rotational grazing on the web and you'll get a good feel for it. You can also search these boards and get a ton of information. If you have to flood everything at the same time it's good to have the dry lot to turn the cows into for a day or 2 so the don;t pug the pasture too badly when it's wet.
