I have a ten year old Red Poll/Charolais cross that has always been one of my better cows. Raised her from a heifer and she has never missed a beat calving on time and gave plenty of milk, always raising one of my best calves.
This year she calved with a smallish black heifer. Her bag is a little loose from years of raising big calves and she had no apparent milk. The little calf followed her for two or three days trying to nurse and never seemed to get enough to be satisfied. With no bowel movement I became concerned. I had thought she would begin to produce more milk with good feed and all the nursing, and she finally did after about four or five days. The calf is growing well now.
At her age, should she be a candidate for the cull list or could this be just a one time event. It sure would be expensive to replace her with prices so high, and like I said, I would still call her one of my best looking and best doing cows. She is the boss cow and leads the others to fresh pastures when I open gates.
