I have a mare who when I went out to feed this morn seemed to have a slight case of choke going on. She is interested in food and has good gut sounds and gum color. Not much poop last night I'm watching for colic. She has a hard time swallowing but will, she also has a brown green drool going. I pulled her food and added mollassas to her water to encourage her to drink, she is about 20 days into foal, had her ultra sounded 2 days ago. Any other thoughts.

Thanks Alan

i dont know much about horses but what you got sounds like impacted grass feed or hay in her mouth and when she swallows she chokes id get her to the vet an have that checked out scott

I spoke with my vet and she came up with the same thing you did, sounds like a impaction in the back of her mouth, she wants to see if it passes in a couple of hours. I don't want to sedate her if I don't have to. But I will not take any chances with this mare, she's still interested in feed ( the little handful I give her) and she doesn't seem to be in discomfort other than a hard time swallowing.

Thanks Alan

I have an older horse that chokes. I feed all his feed in a mash. They need the extra water to soften the feed to go through an irritated esophagus. I would try to mix up some mineral oil & warm water in a syringe and give it to her to see if you can soften what is in her throat. Let us know how it turns out.

Turned out to be an bacterial infection infecting the lymph nodes, thanks all, hope I don' t lose the foal! She's on soaked hay, beet pulp and anti-biotics and Banamine paste. I'll hope for the best.

i wonder if thats what was wrong with my mare back in the fall. she darn near died. couldnt swallow anything but apparently got enough water down to keep her hydrated. lost a ton of weight but she was fat to begin with. had the green snot and drool, stood around with her head in the water bucket. thought it was west nile or sleeping sickness, did blood tests and they all came back negative. finally the thing that cured her was dexamethazone. her larynx was swollen closed but we never knew why. the dex took the swelling down and now shes healthy as can be

She's on the road to well-ville. I hope she has retained her foal, today is 30 days for the foal. I'll have her ultra sounded at 45 days.

Thanks for asking,
Alan
