I am selling a healthy young cow tomorrow by the pound at the Flemingsburg, KY Stockyard. This is a cow of excellent form, black, three years old. She is shy and nervous. She is at least a 7 in body condition. I guess her at 1450 maybe more likely 1500 pounds. She is a handsome cow.

What does the terms Breaker, Boner, Lean and Light mean for slaughter cows? How should she be rated?

Why would you not just deliver her to Warsaw and give her a happy life?

Based upon your description, would say she will be a breaker. Should bring more money than you have ever sold a packer cow for unless you have sold a really big meaty one in the last month or so. She probably won't be the top selling cow because fat cows are usually discounted a little but will still bring a lot of money.

Many years ago, I had an outlet for pound cows. The gentleman that was my "go between" got Alzheimer's, and the deal ended. If you are on that end, your paid on dressing percent. You get a check after it's slaughtered. You don't want be on either end of the spectrum. Also cows that look like they would yield good don't always. Also, a thin pound cow, that's been somewhere making a hard living will shock and amaze you with its average Dailey gain and TLC. Pleasantly to, sometimes you spot some heavy with a calf. Cha Ching if you wait, and then let her fatten again.
I also hope there is enough ananimity here to post this. The buying of those things at a stock yard is not really an auction. The guys with a place for them know what there worth, and that's all they pay. If there are 2 guys buying pound cows, they take turns winning. I've actually been witness to fist fights because someone actually made it an auction.

She shipped. Jesus, it was frightful. I am ridding myself of her because of her disposition. Not mean but nervous. She acted like she was going over the rails. I had her about to go into the trailor (Mike Gifford and I agreed that I should load her because she was least afraid of me) and she spun on a dime and ran into the pivot post of the sweep. It was a short distance but she still hit it hard. I still had the sweep gate on her and when she got arund again she jumped into the trailor and Mike slide the door shut. I called him and hour later and he said she never calmed down. Glad she is gone. I gave her two years to settle in. Just was not in her genes.

That's the funny part Vic, he kept telling me to kick ole Blue but I just didn't feel comfortable mistreating a man's dog right there on his farm and in front of him.

Yep. I tried to palpate her last week and I thought she as going to kill herself. I gave up.

Mike Gifford hauled her. He was wonderng why until he saw the act she put on. I think we were both glad when he pinned the door shut!!!!

She is a marvelous looking beast. Shame!!
