Slanker

he has good bloodlines.his herd is grassed based an rasised.with very little hay or feed durning the winter.he beleives in the way he raises cattle.call an talk to him.see if you like the way he raises his cattle.

Obviously, with their all grass and no hay or supplementation program they probably NEED to stay away from high or even average growth EPDs. The EPDs just tell you the predicted growth potentional of the animal. Every operation would not necessarily benefit from using the trait leaders. IF Hereford had a $EN EPD (like ANgus does) Slankers program would probably benefit from having that number and I suspect might be amoung that trait's leaders. All that said, I would rather HAVE EPDs available than go back to an all eyeball all the time program.

Just another guy who couldn't sell what he had, saw somebody else doing something different, now beats that drum as some sort of a "leader".

Anybody know him or use his bulls? Click on "just managing to get by" on website and check out the section on EPD'S. Any thoughts or opinions?

I checked out his site....did you read his "letter to drovers" I pulled this from that letter....

4) The dawning realization that grain, grain-based foods, and grain-fed meats are the fundamental cause for nearly all (if not all) chronic diseases in America.

BTW, I am still mulling this statment over, because I just don't know how to comprehend it....

This is not new news. In the medical field we have known for some time now that high carb, high fat intake causes obesity. Being overweight or obese is the cause of many diseases and health conditions, including the following:

Hypertension
Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
Type 2 diabetes
Coronary heart disease
Stroke
Gallbladder disease
Osteoarthritis
Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
Some cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)

Thoses in bold are 80% of chronic health problems in Canada and the USA. By 2010 50% of our children will be overweight. There are more overweight and obese people in our countrys now then ever before.

There may be something to the idea of health issues we have in the US and Canada due to grain based diets of our animals. Argentina for example consumes twice as much meet per person as we due, but they have half our cancer and heart problems......Dont know about you, but that sorta makes me wonder. Their animals are grass fed

May have something to do with the fact that the average person in this country gets little or no substantial exercise and these kids you are talking about sit in front of the tv and play video games instead of going outside and playing. I am sure that the average Argentinian is far more active than his American counterpart. The angus Journal had an article last month about how much grassfed beef you would have to eat to gain the health benefits from the Omega 6 fatty acids, and it is 100 lbs. per day. I like burgers, but not that much. :)

I totally agree, Brandon! The more chances for check and double check, the greater opportunity you have of making fewer mistakes.

Although I am not sure you can make the arguement about obesity in people and grain-fed cattle, his management program is almost identical to our own. Not too many people come rushing in to pick up the cattle, but when they do, we never get any complaints.

The arguement is grain fed beef is higher in fat which in return raises chol. and over all fat intake.

Oh I understand that. But to place blame on grain-fed beef in itself is pretty harsh. For the amount of beef that most people eat in a week, I would look at all the processed crap (i.e. candy, cereals, soda, instant pasta, freezer foods) that are readily available and probably have a much higher consumption rate than that for beef.

I agree. We also need to consider not only what we eat, but how we prepare it before we eat it.

Agreed.
