Help, I have never had this happen before the hubby's cow dog got skunked tonight, what is the best method to get the smell off or is it a wear off kind of thing.

Dawn dish soap. It cuts the oils that the spray has in it. Though nothing works miracles. You will smell it for quite some time. But Dawn does work the best.

Thanks y'all amazing I have lived this long and this has never happened to one of our dogs before. I hope never again lol she is stinking up the place. Again thanks I think a dawn bath is in her very near future, if I can get up the nerve to get that close to her ewwwww.

We have had that happen, and used this recipe which removed the smell from the dog but NOT the bathroom where the dog was bathed!

In the plastic container, combine 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons of liquid soap (dawn works well). Add lukewarm water if needed (for larger dogs). Mix ingredients well. The solution will fizz, as a chemical reaction is occurring. Use immediately - do not store. Scrub deep into the dog.

Our dog is westie, so WHITE. The mix not only took away the smell but made his coat really white!!! lol

Good luck!

She is a red heeler. To be honest if this got the smell off her I wouldn't care if it turned her into a white heeler! Lordy she stinks.

I used it in a bath on some new pups I brought home. Those two guys were eaten up with them and the dead fleas were making the suds look like French vanilla ice cream.

Okay two things, I'm not trying to be an azz..... Sorry.

Dawn for killing fleas??? Really why did we not hear of this years ago? Try frontline, advantage, or revolution, but use it right get it on the skin not just in the the hair.

Skunk, years ago I had two or three times it was needed. Soak the dog with warm water and scrub the crap out of him/her with tomatoe juice. Sounds weird but it does/did work. Good luck getting skunk out is not fun.

I have always heard to bathe your dog in tomato juice to remove the skunk odor. Never had the problem, but let us know what works.

dawn has been used for years for washing animals. they even have a picture of a duck covered in oil on it some times.

Just leave the dog outside - it takes about three weeks but the smell goes away

While that happens you will get used to it and it will keep the neighbours out of the yard as well

Tonnes of ways to get rid of the smell - some work well and some are schitte - you will see them both on this thread if it goes long enough.

There are worse smells trust me. In the meantime good luck and do not panic - it could have been worse - it could have been you. (Got that T shirt).

The peroxide/baking soda/dish soap works the best. Wear rubber gloves.
The worst skunk experiences that I have had is when the skunk sprays next to the house and the scent is drawn into the house through the open bedroom window. That will wake you in a hurry.
I think that Dawn subdues fleas due to it's degreasing qualities. The flea suffocates.

Dawn is fine for a bath, I was referring to killing fleas.
