The last few days we chopped our corn for silage. It was by far the best crop we have ever had. The silage corn averaged 14.5 ton/acre! When we planted it we hoped we would get close to 8, never did we dream it would do this. It was dam tough to keep up on the pile packing and we used 2 different packing tractors. Lots of corn in it as well. Looks like great feed. It was fun getting it put up.

I've driven one of those trucks...no AC and hot as blazes...every once in a while I swear the chopper operator would throw the discharge up toward the cab and blow about a bushel of corn thru the window on me just for the pure he!! of it. ;-)

BRG - Do you still feed out the bales that form the bunk? How do they hold up by the time you can pull them away. Nice pics, thanks for sharing. Starting to see alot of chopping around here also.

Sorry, I am not understanding your question.

In the pics it looks like the side walls of the pile are made of round bales. I was just wondering if the bales spoil alot and do you still feed those bales? Maybe I'm seeing it wrong.

I am a little slow tonight :) Yes we still feed them. Not much feed goes to waste around here. We usually grind it and mix it in with the rest of the grinding hay.

Is the chopping done by a contractor? Looks like they are getting it done fast.

Yes, we hire it all chopped and hauled. They were a cruising. We had a hard time keeping up on the pile. I guess that's a good problem :)

Sometimes it IS a problem. Hauling it in too fast and you don't get the proper pack on it to make the best quality silage. If you see your packer getting behind ask the man running the chopper to slow down a bit and take a break.

We were fine, it was just the last hour or so that was the toughest, as it was the closet field. I didn't stop him as they charge ALOT by the hour.
