sickle section question

We normally use a plain guard with bottom serrated sickle sections. I have purchased some haying equipment where folks have mixed and matched sections - - including some with a top serrated construction.

What is the intended use for a top serrated section?

alternating the serrated edge from the top to the bottom every other section helps to clean the gaurd and provides a better cut by using both edges of the the gaurd. Top and bottom.
