We have a black angus calf that is 3 months old. He has been healthy up until recently. He has had watery grey poop. He is now just laying around and moaning. We have put him in the barn and giving him electrolytes. We have to keep at him to get him to eat. Any suggestions?

temp. has been normal. He has been sucking on his mom. Now on Electrolytes with some Milk replacer in it. We have been offering grain and hay. He just lays around and moans.

anything in his feed ration changed recently?

...ie. has he recently been put on a different type of grain or recently had the amount of grain increased?

Does his feed have decoquinate in it and is he eating calf starter ? I guess I'm starting to wonder about coccidiosis .

Hmmm. OK.

Have you tried taking a stool sample to the vet and have them take a look (under the microscope)?

My first thought was acidosis... second might be coccidiosis... could easily be any number of other things though. Can't say for sure without running cultures or putting it under a microscope.

Have you talked to your vet?

He started with it this week. The vet came and gave him a shot and left some for us to give. Which we did. He thinks he didn't get enough colostrim at birth and some type of bug is affecting his brain???

Couldbe severla things Coccidiosis, diarrea, accidiosis, get poop sample to vet. It doesn't sound like brain fever but haven't had a calf with it for a while so i don't remeber whether or not they get the runs like that or not. The vet is your best investment right now if you have a good one.

What big city did you just come from, TN, that you've never heard an animal groan/moan when it's in pain?

Didnt come from no city. I have heard them beller when in pain but never groan. EVER!

TN, you need to spend a little more time with your cows.

No wait... I'd forgotten. You haven't pulled a calf since the '70s and your calves come out like spitting watermelon seeds. Your cows probably don't know they've even had a calf, and sick or downer animals get shot. That might explain your comment.
