Sick calf advice

I found a new baby calf yesterday. Poor fella was just about gone when I discovered him. He was hung up in some vines in the edge of a pond. I was able to rope him and get him out. He from the looks of it had been there a good while. He was so exhausted that he couldn't stand up. Other than that he looked fine. I checked on him today and he was up on his feet but his head was down like a sick calf usually does. He had a little bit of snot on his nose but he is still very weak. I'm not sure if he has ever sucked or not. Any suggestions on what I can give him or do for him to help get him back on his feet?

Tube him with colostrum, synthetic if needs be. Maybe an antibiotic, one of the serious butt kicker types.

Next time you will want to get some colostrum in a weak newborn calf immediately. Antibodies from the colostrum aren't absorbed from the gut after 24 hours, so if inadequate antibodies in the calf, much more susceptible to disease. Antibiotics are not a substitute for immunity.

A weak calf potentially won't be able to nurse, and it needs the energy from the milk to gain strength. Especially if it is cold out.

Good luck.
