We're looking to get a new/used shredder. What brands would you recommend and what would you stay away from?

We are looking for something in the 7'-8' wide range. Will be using a 50-60 hp tractor to shred pasture and small mesquites.
 
Thats a good question! I have always had junkers and been able to piece them together as I go, which I still have 4or5 5 and 6 footers. Last summer we found a farm sellout and bought a 10.5ft BushHog. Man that thing cuts! Built to last! It loads my 4000 ford when you first turn it on then the cutter takes over and we're flyin.

I have a 10ft John Deere 1008 which has been working good for us, I got it used from a neighbor, We had a bush hog 10ft before that which we bought new , it worked good but we had a lot of problems with it mostly with the drive shafts between the gear boxes twisting . Got rid of it when we got the John deere
 
The premium rotary cutter brands as usually noted by dealers are Bush Hog, Rhino, LandPride, John Deere & Woods. Are there other good brands? YES

Kodiak, Modern, Bush Wacker, Midwest, & Taylor Way are the next step down.

Just remember that even the premium cutter MFG's usually have a least 3 different duty classifications of cutters.
 
I've got a 6' Rhino that I bought when I first got my place, and it has seen every rock and 4"-6" high stump on this place, and other than the shear pins, I've never put any parts on it. It could probably use a blade sharpening by now, but now I dont mow as much since I have the cows. The deck has held up nicely and I'd recommend them if you come across one.
 
I prefer a Sidewider over my Rhino. Whatever you do put a slip clutch on the shaft, trusting to shear pins is a good way to tear up a tractor after knocking the cluch or hydraulic pump out. They all run off the PTO drive shaft. Spend 150 bucks for a good slip clutch or a couple of thousand to split the case for repairs.
