Packers bought the few cattle they needed at an average of $100.70 per cwt., leaving feedyard margins at a negative $203 per head.

Packer margins held mostly steady at a historic $415 per head, leaving the spread between feeder losses and packer profits at $618, according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker.

For all practical purposes, there are really only 4 packers

You're thinking. You're paying attention. You're reasoning

There are angles. I hope you find one that works for you.

I am very open to someone revealing an angle that works for me.

I sold 10 (5 heifers/5 steers) avg weight of 460 yesterday, direct to a backgrounder. He paid the average of 3 of the top markets here in the state. At least I cut out the commission and fees of the barn.

Freezer beef cuts more. Find people who want 1/2 a beef. You'll always wind up with 7 or 9 or some odd number. You may have to just take a half yourself. You're saving them expense. A win/win. Usually you get repeat customers. Give them your best.

Real estate worked for me. I lived hand to mouth for a very long time. Extra jobs, extra work, selling fence posts, selling limestone, selling firewood - I've done a lot of things. Mowing pastures never earned me much but I've done that too. When you get a few nickels, buy low. Sell high. I made plenty of mistakes.

I am working on the freezer beef, but just about every farmer around here raises 4 or 5 per year, plus here people buy on price, think Walmart.

There is no USDA facility closer than 120 miles one way, so that present a challenge.

This is not my money maker. I made my money. I just get upset by the inequities of the beef market. The packers have the big lobby money and pay for laws that kick the little guy between the legs.

The cattle producers’ share of the retail price of beef has been as high as 70%, but today it is just 38.5%. Last week, cattle producers were losing over $200.00 per head while the monopoly meatpackers like JBS were making over $400.00. Farmers and ranchers own and care for their cattle 365 days a year and are going broke, while the Big Four packers own the cattle for about a week and get rich. Enough is enough: It is time for President Trump and Secretary Perdue to take charge and take action.

We brought 5 in last Monday to be processed, all repeat customers from last year, last year we sold them for 1.25 a pound this year we sold them for 1.20 a pound and no complaints, two bought wholes, two bought halves and the rest were quarters, got three quarters for ourselves for free and made a little extra.

The market is sending a message. You can either hear the message or continue losing equity.

I was never much on cryptic messages.

I guess you are saying get out of the cattle business now.

The message is not cryptic. It is being sent loud and clear. You can either compete at this price level or you can’t. It is a harsh reality and government intervention will only make the problem worse.

What segment of the cattle business are you in?

I am not for the reasons stated above. Been out for a long time. Does that make my message any less true? If so ignore me. I ran cattle on my own for twenty + years could not make money so I got out.
