Sexed Calves

Saw on RFDTV today that they were selling bred heifers guarenteed to have heifer calves. They said they determined sex by ultrasound. Bet that's cheap, I know it probably possible. I wonder what the accuracy rate is? After all I was supposed to be a girl

It's done by ultrasound and if the tehcnician is worth his/her salt it's close to 100% accurate.

Most of the higher end bred heifer sales here do it, then put in like groups. You can usually add a hundred bucks or so to the price of unsexed heifers from what I've seen.

It's done by ultrasound and if the tehcnician is worth his/her salt it's close to 100% accurate.

Thats right, been working with some ultrasound and it sure takes alot of practice to sex a fetus

There is a window of when ultrasound can accuratley and consistently sex calves i don't remember exactly when it is. It seems like around 45 days to ?? anybody know for sure.

The guy I have been working with had me practice on some 105 day pregnancies. I should think you can be fairly accureate any time after 45 days. Just started with this ultrasounding for sex thing so I'm not for sure. anything that can be shared on ther matter would be much appreciated

Our vet likes 60-75 days for sexing. He feels it's too hard to manipulate the fetus if it's further along and too hard to see if it's earlier. But he's using older equipment out in the sun and that sure screws up the view ability.

we did 12 cows and it ran us about $150 with a few other things thrown in.

it seems expensive, but it helps a lot with making plans and it was well worth the cost.

Same here. I had one ultrasounded 2 weeks ago that I thought should have been about 75 days along to AI. I was hoping to also find out the sex on the calf at that time. Turns out though that she was only about 45 days and bred to the cleanup bull. He said he wasn't sure on the sex since she was only about 45 days. Cost me $30. $10 for the office visit and $20 for the ultrasound.
