Anyone have any experience with Senepol Cattle? If so, what do you like / dislike about them? I live in Georgia, and have been considering a Senepol / Red Angus cross to help with the heat and humidity down here.

Have also considered Senepol / Dexter cross, since we have limited space (about 25 acres of pasture). Any thoughts about that cross?

Thanks

i would say that senepol are good for the theat tolerance, but that is about it from my experience with them. I think you give up too much as far as muscle and bone otherwise. I would stay away from them and depending where you are in GA you may not need as much "heat tolerance" in the cattle as you think

I bought a Senagus (sp) - senepol/angus bull a couple years back. He was real good looking, plenty of muscle. His sire - fullblood senepol was absolutely huge and gentle as a mouse. We only kept him about 3 weeks of which I think he was out at least 2 weeks. Brought him back home 3 times, put him up in the pens and he'd jump out. Had a 16 ft gate open trying to get him to go through and he would jump the fence not 5 ft from the open gate.

I live in Georgia too and we're starting our herd. I had originally considered a Senepol/Murray Grey cross, but in the end chose to raise purebred MG's.

Good luck.

At one time the Kerr Foundation was really high on Senapol....crossed with Angus. We used to get a newsletter from them, but apparently they've gone through some reorganization. Here are some links to their site. If you don't find anything, email someone and ask them about their Senepol X Angus.

We had a Senepol bull back when they first got prominant here in the states. One of the best replacement makers we have ever had. I think we sold the last cow out of him last year, she was at least 20 yrs. old. I have never seen a more gentle bull, I used to catch him laying down in the field and jump on his back. Off we'd go until he swatted me with his tail on day and knocked me off. As for a bull that won't stay in, my father says "any bull that won't jump a fence to get with the cows in heat isn't any good." I realize bulls need to be kept up sometimes but there is some logic there. I have since thought about using some semen to make some more replacements.
