Semen viability

On the snakebite bull, anyone have any guesses when his semen would be viable again? Its been 37 days since I pulled him to the house after being bit. And almost 2 weeks since I've seen any residual symptoms. He's still awful thin but gaining now. Vet recommended waiting another 45 days for the BSE. I've got 3 cows that needed bred last month and another group ready now.
Any guesses? Short of a BSE now. Don't want to spend the money twice

I'd be surprised if he has any viable semen in quantity till about 90 days after the fever has broken.

He never did have a fever unless it was in the first 10 days before I brought him here. I'm trying I find another bull to rent or buy but anything worth a dam is in use right now. Talk about bad timing!

I would throw him in with a couple of cows in heat and let him get flushed out then wait a couple of weeks and do the BSE

And just roll the dice on the semen being viable?
That's my dilemma...
Option 1... Buy another bull for short term use
Option 2... Rent a bull
Option 3... Bring the 3 open cows here to play with and be more patient
Option 4... Buy another bull, sell him when he regains some condition. He has a current bcs of 3. Maybe....

There are 3 other cows we have to check Saturday. After that there are 5 needing bred, and then on to the main group of 20

No, that is to just get the old damaged stuff flushed out before his real BSE

Another option, help him out. Use him for heat detection and AI whatever he's riding... Between the two of you you might actually get something pregnant.

I've thought about that. but I'd have to bring them back home as well and it would be a complete crapshoot :bang:

Hook, putting together the physiology of how venom affects tissue in a mammal (your bull) and the process of spermatogenesis which is the same in all mammals whether Homo sapiens or bovines, I would think that the production of semen which is a combination of sperm cells, lubricants, food, etc. produced by the testes and other glands like the cowpers, prostate, etc. is about back to normal. I sincerely doubt that anyone has specifically studied the recovery of the reproductive capacity of a bovine following snakebite. I performed my Masters Degree thesis in herpetology so I can tell you for sure there is not a great deal of interest for good reason in funding such research because of the lack of need for it. Information on the effects of snakebite is out there and a vet gets enough exposure to the subject to understand the process. But I am going to go on record here saying very few vets have any command of the subject. Simply because the need to know is not compelling enough. I will tell you that I would have him tested right now which will tell you if his reproductive organs are back on line at an acceptable level.

BTW, it is not a question of whether he has viable semen. If there is semen, it should be viable. The word viable basically means alive. From the dictionary:capable of living. If meiosis is occurring in the testes, it is producing viable sperm cells. The question is whether the tissues of the testes are recovered enough that the meiosis that produces gametes is occurring at a rate to produce enough semen to accomplish fertilization.

Inyati a BSE exam will run at the least 150 bucks. Farm call alone is 75. My concern now is throwing good after bad. I have the microscopes and all, just no way to get the ejaculate.

Hook, the BSE does the following which I copied from a college research paper;
A BSE consists of three steps or parts:
1. A physical exam including the internal and
external reproductive structures.
2. A measurement of scrotal circumference; 30 cm is
the minimum acceptable size for even young bulls, and the
size requirement increases with age.
3. Collection and evaluation of semen. At least 30%
motility and 70% normal morphology are required as a
minimal acceptable level.
The standardized procedure of evaluation will result
in a classification into one of three categories:
a. “Satisfactory” potential breeder
b. “Unsatisfactory” potential breeder
c. “Classification Deferred” (with a recommended
date for re-evaluation)

I am surprised there is not a count piece of the puzzle, in other words number of spermatozoa per cc or other volumetric unit. But you got more to do than just look at the cells. You would have to know if their morphology is acceptable. Maybe I misunderstood you. You said you have a microscope (you will probably need oil immersion); are you planning on doing your own evaluation? You would have to get some training to properly evaluate the motility and morphology?

PS I think Number 1 and 3 above are important to your circumstances. First, looking at the internal anatomy of the reporductive apparatus is going to make sure there is not tissue damage that is physically going to prevent the bull from performing. Number 3 will tell you if the sperm being produced by the spermatogenesis process are normal/acceptable and thus capable of penetrating the pellilucida of the egg which is fundamental to the formation of the zygote.

Good one, dun.

I stand by the opinion I posted on your other thread about the bull situation. That would be # 4 below.

That was inyati.and cp with his pig

Taking advice from this thread I loaded him and turned him back out to the place he got bit that also has a group of open cows. Blow out his pipes so to speak. Right off the trailer he went to checking the cows. Even was checking the heifer calfs ( they're only 3 months old avg)
I'm borrowing a bull for the 3 opens that should have been bred a while back. And if he fails the BSE in 40 days ill be getting a new bull. May be getting a new one anyway. Not quite sure yet. Patience may pay off.
