Selling Out

Been thinking real hard about selling out this fall. How much longer can the price of cattle keep going up?? With the price of cows this high and going up I feel like the bottom is going to fall out. Sure would like to cash out when it's high. And there's some good CRP money out there right now for planting trees. But I hate pine trees, so I am lost as to what to do.

If you think you will ever get back in, you might as well stay in. That is my philosophy.

I honestly believe sometimes selling out is the smartest move you can make, many times pride gets in the way, but the fluctuating ag market will give you more opportunities. A very wise old dairyman helped me realize this and I am thankful for him opening my eyes.

If you sell out you'll want back in 12 months from now.

The world has enough pine trees but we need good cattlemen.

My 2 Cents.
If you are a good cattleman when you sell out, you will still be a good cattleman when you buy back in at lower prices. Just with more $.

I think about getting out, and doing something spring, summer, and fall. Maybe back grounding, maybe buying breds. I sometimes think I would not be me if I didn't have cows. For a short time in my life, I didn't own a horse. I was 16, and sold my horse to buy a 1969 international scout. It's been along time ago now obviously, but I just didn't feel right.

Well it depends upon your own thoughts

Are you in this as a business?

Or as a hobby?

As a business, you should NEVER be ashamed of taking and making a profit

As a hobby you generally just keep subsidizing by working off farm and throwing money at the hobby

Best to all

Personally for me I look at cattle as a hobby with potential for profit.

If it wasn't fun, it would be a no brainier to take the cash. For me, I feel there are too many unfinished goals. Sure you could rent to stockers, or even load up on them seasonally, but what would a guy do with all the free time?

Thanks, I've been thinking along the lines of stockers myself. With good timing and a little luck, you can make a couple of dollars.

I worked with a guy years ago whose wife liked to milk cows. They would slowly build up a herd and then sell out. They did it three times that I know of. He said they never really made much money milking but made good money every time they sold out.

Being familar with pine trees this would cause concern for me too...maybe if you can simply plant them far enough from the house it would work. lolol. I sold out 18 months ago and took my money. Have bought a few odds and ends since then just to have a few cattle around. Nothing wrong with making money.

Get your money when your pleased then run someone else's stockers/money till you decide what to do next.:)

If I was thinking about it, I would have done it a month ago.

I put way more emphasis on what is going to happen to inflation than I do with about anything else. I think inflation is about to bite us. Is it better to have your money in a commodity than in the bank? Very possibly.

I think money in the bank, isn't really going to be money in the bank. So it will be a gamble either way.

I would rather have land as anything. But honestly, with no hard fast rules established like they are suppose to be, you won't know the best course of action to take until it is far past too late.

Sell out and run custom stockers. If the price falls out then buy back in. If it doesn't then stay with stockers.

I don't see many people that disperse their herd and then start up again. Seems to be a one way trip. :(

An issue with stockers is usually it takes more $/acre to load up with them then it does with cows. So after you look at the cash required to operate each enterprise talk to your tax man.

An advantage with stockers is you can buy LRP if you are concerned about a big market drop.
