Got some 6 and 7 weight calves, thinking about selling them next weekend. I usually sell mine in Feb but keep them a few more weeks this year. Wonder if I do better waiting a couple more weeks, got plenty of hay and rye/clover pasture so that not an issue.
I am in north central Texas

Sometimes I have the same problem making my mind up wether to hold them a longer than usual. What helps me make the decision other, than the weather, is realizing if just one gets sick or dies then holding them over was a mistake. Just something else to think about.

figure the ave price in your area.an see if you can live with it.if so then sale.

Figure the average price and subtract about $10. cause that's probably what you'll get.

I sold last week, too. Should have waited until next year....

Watch what I do and then do the opposite. :lol2:

I think I have about got this buy high and sell low thing figured out. Week before last our markets were up a little and I thought I would sell after the first of the month, then last week both markets close by were down. I got a small load that needs to go this week, all of them are weaned and on feed so they need to go. So either Tuesday or Thursday this week they should be gone. Just having trouble making my mind up which market to go to.

Flip a coin, that's just as good a way to do it as any.

The Thursday market is usually better, plus it will give it a couple days extra to dry up to get them loaded. I hat tonot support the closest market to me but they usually average a little better. Which would you pick out of these:

Group of calves is about half of boys and girls.

thanks for all the responses:
Tom I think I got the buy high sell low idea figured out, my wife says I am expert at that LOL.

1982 that happen one time for me, one of best calf I had and I went out to check herd and blackleg had gotten him. I was in a week or 2 of selling him. That was my fault as did not get it vac, all the ones I have are vac now, but other things can go wrong beside blackleg.
Think I going to do what Dun said, flip a coin, way my luck going, that be best way, at least that will be an educated guess LOL.

also been trying to decide where to haul to Emory or Gainesville, heard they got new owners at Gainesville and things are better up there now.

Not sure how far u are from Buffalo but I have found they have more calf buyers than most places around here.More buyers =better price.Just my experience.

Last year we sold a couple cows and a few calves in April and then in May prices picked up about 15 cents.
Perhaps that's just around here as pasture is in good supply in May.

I think its hard to plan on anything as speculators in the stock market drive up the futures and its just a roller coaster ride and unfortunately we (beef producers, grain producers, etc.) are underneath and that may not be totally correct but I keep looking at that more and more.

Only went to one sale last week and about everything was down except heavy bulls which were bringing from $.72 up to $.76 a pound. No really good pairs at all...tops was around $950. A few good calves brought $110 to $120 but not many.

Calves are definately down here.. but I understand good bred cows are up. Go figure. Of course I have 10 bred cows that need to go, but can't find the time to get the loaded.

I'd hold on to them as long as you have pasture for them.
