Hello,

Has anyone used any of the seeded Pangola type grasses? They're used in subtropical and tropical regions with rainfall above 600 mm.

Some of the cultivars I know of are Strickland and Jarra of Digitaria milanjiana (common name is Milanje finger grass).

I'm looking at planting a permanent pasture grass variety in the subtropics which I'll be irrigating on deep loam river flat soil. Our annual rainfall av is 1200mm.

From what I've read on the net, about Pangola type grasses, under those conditions the carrying capacity is approx. 7 head per hectare (1 Ha = 2.5 Ac).

Can anyone offer their experience with seeded Pangola type grasses or just Pangola grass (the runner type)?

Never heard of it but it sure sounds interesting!

This website below is full of information on pasture grasses. The only problem the pages take a while to load (with my modem net access).

Pangola http://www.tropicalforages.info/key/For ... iantha.htm

This url mainly covers Pangola the runner species, but includes info and links on all the other Pangola types.

I see a few cultivars listed there for the US, one is Survenola. I haven't heard of that being available here is Australia but it sounds good because of its disease resistance and frost tolerance.

I have a small patch of the runner type of pangola but it's too much like hard work to plant it all over the paddocks. That's why I'm interested in the seeding varieties.
