Hoo boy. Wait till you here this one............:) We were going to ( I like to call it The Farm. Not sure why
other than I can't stand what the fellow who owns it calls the place. I hear him from time to time call it " The Land.") Anyway. Off we go Saturday toward Caradan, Tx. The plan was to meet a fellow to have him pick up a welder but a kids and a High School track meet changed those plans. I suggested we go to the Cattle sale and after looking at the time we figured we could pick up the rental trailer and still make it in time to buy some heifers. When we got to Lampasas the rental trailer was gone. Oh well no biggie. We can just " drive em " home I exclaimed :) Last week the auction house was promoting the sale of a group of Angus heifers that were all from one Ranch. Never did see those cows. The place was packed relative to the Saturday before. A seat here and there. Definately alot more buyers this day. When I first walked in I saw a beautiful large frame brown cow. More of a dark milkshake color than red but nice looking and bred for $710.00............hmm. We found a place right up front on the intake side this time. Bubba says he couldn't see from the seats we were in last Saturday. A nice Red Angus 3 in 1 came up very soon after we sat down. I reminded Bubba it was a 3in1 and we both agreed she looked good and so did her calf. Sold. :) That's one err 2. Or does that count as 3? lol Very soon after that came a really nice 3 or 4 year old black Angus that looks like a winner! Sold! She is a real solid proportionant bred heifer that cost $750.00 for what that is worth. If she drops a calf half as healthy looking as she is it looks like value. I looked at Bubba and ask him " How much money do you have?" We spoke for a moment and out came a 2 year old Longhorn with a lil calf on her side. Sold! I ask him later that day " Why did you buy the Longhorns?" When he originally bought his 52 acres that was all he talked about. He wanted to get some Longhorns. " The price" he exclaimed. I don't think we were inside that sale barn for more than 3 minutes! Lloyd aka Bubba went to pay for his purchase and I went looking for the vet. They were testing cows and one of the fellows pointed the vet out to me. I figured it would be a good idea to give the calfs an antibiotic before we left. The Longhorn couldn't be more than about 6 weeks old and as many cows and calfs it had been exposed to I didn't think it would hurt. We secured some LA200 and he gave them both a shot. Soon after Will showed up and we loaded up and were ready to go. We made it to the fuel station and after speaking with Will decided we should give the calfs a black leg shot too. Back to the store. When we got to the Farm Will gave both calves a black leg shot and castrated the little longhorn. We let em out of the trailer and I noticed they did just what some fellows here said they would do. Run! lol Leroy cut the big Angus out of the group and tried to make friends with her while Bullie took off with the rest of them ! I had walked down to look at the Ponds and when I came back still no cows. It took us an hour to finally find them. The next day they were all up by the water and hay. I'll see them again today I hope. Thanks for reading my story. Peace.
