Looking at replacing our current bull and wondered if anyone had experience with these. We are trying to increase the registered part of the herd but we only run about 25 head. Most of the calves go to the salebarn so pounds matter beut we try to keep a calving ease bull. We have been selling few of the best bulls and heifers for breeding stock.

Want the best bull I can for the money but have to stay reasonable. Myself and another member have discussed this some, even the thinking of a bull being worth 5 weaned calves. Just currious to others thoughts.

here 5 weaned calves can garner around 4 grand, right now... you can buy a good bull for around 2... the money will be in replacement cows and heifers
Not seeing many bulls here for that, went to sale the other night that averaged almost $3000 and the ones I liked were $3500 or more.

Guess I am too picky.

nothing wrong with being picky,,, private treaty is the way i buy mine... cant sling a dead cat and not hit a angus breeder here.. those special sale bulls,, you can bet they got more feed in them than they'll ever pay for them selves at that price

Both really good bulls but the other side of the equation is just as important. Personally if I was choosing between the two with the same dam and all other things we're pretty even I like Final Answer. I have seen a passel of calves out of sons of him and been very impressed. I like Hoover Dam better than both of em though.

imo for what thats worth i own a few reg. angus cows and if i were gonna use a sav bull on them it would not dought be final answer 3 of my reg cows are out of 004. they wean huge calves with tons of growth, but they are also the biggest cows i own at this time. i know a breeder here local who has some pioneer bulls and if i decide i need a bull this year i would go look at them first.

Maybe you're too picky, but you must be feeling better. ??

Still sore and can't do much with the arm. Hopefully the staples come out tomorrow.
Got too much time to look at sale catalogs  .
Its a struggle just to keep everything fed, arm swells up if I don't keep it above chest level. Its real fun putting out hay using only one arm.

My favorite SAV bull is still Iron Mountain!

I have seen some good Iron Mountain calves. My biggest issue with him is lack of consistency. Lot more variation in frame and thickness than some of the other SAV sires.

What do you think Final Answer or Bismark does for frame or thickness?

The Final Answer's that I have seen are half a frame size bigger on average than the Bismarcks. The Bismarck and Pioneer bulls are very similar in frame and thickness. I think the Bismarck's are more eye appealing. I personally would not use Final Answer as I believe there are younger bulls (sons and grandsons) that are better.

Cant go wrong with either... We have 15-20 Bismark fall yearling heifers that are as consistent and uniform as any sire group thats ever been here.. They are correct, stylish, thick, moderate, and DEEEEEEEEEEEEEP bodied with alot of guts.. Did i mention they are deep.. We also have 2 yr olds by both.. Good uddered and plenty of milk with both. As you can tell we have been well pleased with both bulls.. We have some sons of both in our upcoming bullsale.. Check em out at this link..http://www.reedent.com/midwest/catalogs/cmf/cmf.html Come for a visit sometime soon and I will show you the females and you can decide for yourself.
