Any thoughts on this ABS bull? He looks kind of weak-backed in his picture, but in the test data (promoted by ABS) it looks like his off spring are real standouts. I also like that he traces back to GAR Gridmaker; who I still consider about the most powerful black angus bull ever (I wish that GAR hadn't veered away from this approach)..

I've only seen three of them in person and really liked them and the only complaint I've heard was that they don't match the rest of the calves because they grow so well on limited feed that they really weigh up compared to other AI sired calves here in CA. Repeat customers seems to be what is driving his sales and he's a top seller so he's doing something right. I've really considered using him myself a few times on commercial cows and I'm about as picky as it gets when it comes to bull selection.

Calves growing too fast is a complaint that I'd like to have.

I like that ABS runs Angus Sire Alliance commercial testing. I think it helps sort the wheat from the chaff at an earlier age
and gives me more confidence in the epds of the bulls that come out of it.

I ended up breeding 15 to Bruiser (heifers), and 10 cows to the hereford bull Ribeye. Hopefully they take. They were sure having a lovefest prior to breeding..

Good choices. I really like rib eye as well. I've seen a bunch of them on calves where they retained ownership and everyone in the chain likes them.

I'm not in love with the picture of him but judging by his numbers he is one of my favorite SAV Bulls. I often wonder why they don't post updated pictures on the sites.

His picture is not impressive but everyone that I spoke to about him raved about his offspring..

I know it's hard to remember things that will happen 9 months from now but try and remember to give us an update when those Bruiser and Ribeye calves hit the ground!

Any updates on SAV Bruiser? Anyone have any calves out of him? There seem to be a lot of show calves out of him...but the photos are hard to judge. Do they have straight backs? Thanks in advance.

I do now. I packed up and left CA a few months ago. This thread is from last year. :D

Ok that makes sense  Did you bring them Limos with you?
No, native cattle are always better. I sold out and started over. I had a handful that I really hated to let go of but overall it was the best choice and I found some registered stock here that made for a fantastic starting point.

Here's the first bruiser bull calf from the fall bred heifer group. Should have 12 more coming. Came quick, went right to nursing, no issues. Prob weigh around 75#

Always good when heifer can drop a bull with no issues. My bruiser semen for a group of 10 heifers arrives later this fall. Keep me posted!

Pic off the latest Bruiser calf. Had 7 so far with no issues, and the due date isn't actually until Sept 8. Only problem so far is that 6/7 are bull calves

Short gestation and calving 6 bulls too. Good data. I will proceed with using him on my heifers. Did you timed ai then so they were all due on the 8th?

Yes I did the 14 day tai for the heifers

I just noticed that on the ABS website, Bruiser weighed less at 21 months than he did at 12 months.
