Been trying to get to emails for nearly an hour, after half an hour tried to get to facebook to notify the person I'm trying to e-mail that I can't check/send e-mails right now but will try again later, sixteen attempts to open facebook and I gave up.

But I can still navigate Cattle Today at only two or three attempts to open each page.
It would almost be nice to go back to yesterday and just write a letter and wait three or four weeks and presume it arrived at that point. We're so reliant on high speed connectivity you just about can't run a rural business without it... but there's still limited internet/cellphone coverage to rural areas.
Thank goodness for free urban wifi. Yes, I'll probably have to drive to town later but by taking the laptop can get those e-mails sorted.

five attempts to post this and counting....

If CT works well, perhaps one of us could sent your friend an email saying you're having problems?

I go over my cell phone connection.. I finally found a reliable place where I get service... it has to be within a foot of the place to work.. VERY finnicky!

This antenna and amplifier solved that problem for me.

Er... I'm not sure I want to know how many times this thread turned up earlier. This is obviously the sixth attempt, there was a version that said seventh attempt and counting, I gave up on the eighth.

Have rebooted the computer now, managed to get to e-mails after only fifty or so attempts. Might need a new modem, these old phone lines are really hard on them and can burn one out once or twice a year.
Thanks Nesikep, hopefully I'll never need to do that but it is a good idea.
Can't go to town right now, picked up a thorn in my truck tyre down the farm and not moving till Monday, when I'll blow it up and take it in to be repaired.

Are you still on dialup Regolith? We have satellite but at times I think I would be better off with dialup. They oversold the space they have on the satellite and it gets pretty crowded at times especially weekends. We are told that when our new satellite goes up later this year things will be better but generally we survive.

Still on dial-up. I'm a total cheapskate.
Part of the reasoning is that I've seen 'fast' rural connections that aren't any better than mine... I get on all right on dial-up if close to town or on a good phone line, 'bout half of the last six farms I've been on have been okay the other half pretty difficult.

You'll have to survive without me for the weekend
Back on urban Wi-Fi thanks to an electric storm passing directly overhead yesterday.
Blew a fuse on the lights circuit, trashed the electric fence unit and I saw two big flashes inside the house - couldn't identify the first, but the second came out of the wall switch for the oven, yet when I checked everything later it all still works... surely that ought to have blown a fuse! it was white flash, not yellow

oh yeah, and the laptop modem. And apparently they aren't making modems for dial-up any more...
But I should have one by next week, till then no internet.
