If you were coming up with a salt limited feed ration, would you just go with corn and cotton seed meal or would you use a mix of corn, soy bean hulls, and wheat mids. Using the latter combination, the mix is cheaper because the three ingredients are less than 1/2 the price of cotton seed meal. Using wheat mids at 1/3 of the total ration, you can still get the protein up to 14% without the cotton seed meal which is about $200 a ton.

Why is this option not used more?

I can only tell you why I wouldn't use it. When I have fed salt-limited supplements, it has been for a protein supplement to go along with plenty of sorry hay for energy. I've always used a 2:1 CSM to salt mix. SBM in place of the CSM depending on current pricing. Twice the protein that you are talking about.

But it sounds like you intend to balance a mix that contains some added energy. Maybe you should try that and let us know how it works out.
