Zenias a 3 year old cow was found dead on Friday. I sold Zenias to Clint as a yearling open heifer. He watches my farm when I am away. His two sons, 9 and 11, fell in love with Zenias as a calf. Zenias was special. A very sweet bovine that responded well to humans.

The boys made a Pet of her. They kept her in a pasture by their house and every evening Zenias came up for treats. The boys loved her. Clint said that no dog could begin to replace Zenias. Here she was at my farm with her Dam, Star.

Here is the picture he sent of where he found her. I think she got her back feet over in a hole on the bank of that holler. The holler is filled with pushed off trees. She could not get her legs up under her weight.

I am going to share a text message he sent me a while ago. He is clearly suffering:

First time that's ever happened to me. Had cows on dad and way worse ground since 2003 and that's the first time and why zenias. Why her. She was my pet. I didn't look at her as even being a cow. Man

That's bad. Always bad to lose a cow - especially one that set itself apart from the others. I lost one of my old gals due to Irma. She had gotten separated from the herd in a field by herself and it looked like during the height of the storm she tried to jump the fence to join the others. Not being as spry as she once was she got tangled in the fence and messed it up pretty good but what was worse she messed up her hips. I watched her a day to see if she would mend and get back up but she never did so I did what I had to do and put her down. Wasn't one of my happier moments.

Really sad that she got stuck that way. I had a heifer due to calve, that I was watching, and checked them twice a day. Found her laying down with her head stuck under a woven wire fence that was a little higher off the ground in that section. She had laid down, probably stretched her head out, right where the little dip was under the fence, then kept trying to lift her head up instead of stretching it out and moving it along the ground, and died trying to get up and lost the unborn calf too. Freak accident. Never had that happen before, ground was basically flat there but a little dip right in that spot under the fence. Have had them get their back down a hill before, but this made me sick. She wasn't a pet like Zenias, but was the last heifer out of an old cow that I had had to finally ship and it was tough. I feel for his loss.

That sucks! I remember you posting pics of her 3 years ago.
I can relate, Mega was one of those cows around here.. What was funny with her his her great hatred of people other than me.
