Ive got a late 70's model 19-4 in need of refinishing. Someone did a refinish at one time. Its more similar to the flat black oxide type finish on a modern black long gun, now, but develops surface rust pretty quickly when handled.

Anyone ever used S&W for this service? Or have a better idea?

Id like something durable, not flashy. Not looking for collector quality finish, just something that will last. Its my daily carry piece regardless of what im doing.

I initially was thinking a cerakote job. Then learned its not practical for a revolver. I do prefer flat finishes, but may not be practical here. Factory re-blue might be the best option, yall tell me.

Heres a screenshot of the S&W options, but am very much open to suggestions. Would like to do it and be good for a while.

Thanks

I kinda life the patina on anything I have... No one else sees them, so it's just me that appreciates the story behind the wear...

I can appreciate that. However, this one has been pretty neglected, and id like to be able to continue to neglect it somewhat without it being detrimental.

Ive sent S&W an email inquiry. I saw on their website they offer a cerakoted model 19. Going to see what they think about durability and what the cost is. Otherwise itll get blued again i reckon.

Was just curious if anyone had a better suggestion.

Thanks.

Just throwing this out there have you checked into hard chrome finish? Probably cost in the $250-$300 range but it would be very durable otherwise factory reblue.

Is that something S&W would do reckon? I would prefer that honestly. Not a fan of carrying a blued anything, but i love this 19. Tractor, truck, woods, corral, it sees it.

Thats a very nice 19. Im going to look into that. Thanks a bunch.

Maybe I just need to clean it more often and leave well enough alone, but it oxidizes, and pretty quick, under the grips and behind the cylinder thumb latch deal. It needs a good cleaning now.

Pitting on cylinder in 1 spot. No bid deal there though.

Almost wears off like spray paint would. Surely not. Lol

I'm not a fan of cerakote, personally. Seen too many rifles with chunks of it missing around the muzzle and at any hard brake angles. There's a coating referred to as "Birdsong's Black T" that I always thought would be good for a pistol such as yours. Never personally owned anything with it, but would be worth looking into.

I Cerakoted the headers on my 1980 Z28. And after running them hard many times they never ever change color. If the cerakote is done correctly it'll last a lifetime.

Read up on that just now. Thanks for the info. $200 + 7% sales tax sounds good too.
