rye pasture

I have a pasture that I planted pasture mix, and threw in some rye for a "cover crop". now I have alot of 6' tall headed out rye, mostly weeds, and a little pasture grass. lesson learned....no rye. What should I do now? cut the rye down, and hope the grass comes, and the rye does not reseed itself? bale it, and hope the rye doesn't reseed itself? wait and combine, and chop straw, and hope the rye doesn't reseed itself. ???? at a loss as to a good approach. it is a fairly impressive field of rye, but a great embarassment for a pasture.

Not to be ugly, but why didn't you graze the hound out of rye insztead of letting it get rank?

it was to be a calving pasture, and it was WET!!! just got it tiled last week. It's not fun pulling cows out of deep mud with the tractor. been there. so that is why the rye didn't get grazed.

What about wheat?

What about bermuda grass? Will they still eat that after it heads?

Chop it and feed it.

I think they will eat it.!?

Never done this - but that is what I would do if it got away on me.

Sooner or later it will get dry enough to get on there with some equipment.

I realize you're saying this to make a point about stuff heading out, and I might be wrong on this as far as the rye goes, but depending on how many head of cattle and how much rye it could prove to be a little too much and cause more problems than it solves. I know that can be the case for mature, headed-out wheat - feeding cattle whole wheat is probably not going to prove to be a very good idea.
