OK folks...what is rumensin?
Never have used it before.
I know what it does or is supposed to do but how does it work and what is it.
In plain speaking terms, I'm not a biochemist.
Reason that I'm asking is that a feed guy has touted it as the "got to have" for our cows and is wanting to sell me barley that is fortified with rumensin. Supposed to be better than cracked corn. Will increase my gain, decrease feed consumption, save big bucks and make more contented cows.
I welcome all insights....
Thanks, Dave Mc

Rumensin is a narrow spectrum antibiotic. When it gets into the rumen it more or less searchs out the less productive bacteria. The inefficient bacteria are killed off and the more productive, more efficient bacteria are allowed to reproduce more effectively. The result is a rumen that has a net higher efficiency at breaking down the contents of the rumen. Hope that helps a little.

I can tell you I've been using with good luck. Basicly the cattle gain better on less feed. Only draw back. Don't feed it to any horses. It kill's them.

Some of it is absorbed. Its a good preventive tretment in confined operations or periods as well.
