Ruined?

Let's say you are building a dock and your cordless drill leaps off the dock and plummets into the murky depths. Let's say about six feet under. Once recovered and given time to dry do you think it will work or is it a goner?

Depends how long it stayed underwater or soaking wet. I left one in the back of the truck one evening with the battery installed, and it poured rain all night. Next day I retrieved it from the truck, and at first thought the battery was just dead. Put a hot battery in and found out the rain had fried the switch, battery connection wires and wires going to the heat sink.
The motor was fine.

Only way to know is to dry it out and give it a try. Crap like that amazws me sometimes. Stuff you think would be ruined works and stuff that you wouldn;t expect any issues with is toast. If you have enough rice, bury it in rice for a day or so. The rice will help draw the moisture out of it. Worst case is you will be out some rice .

I would make sure it is as dry as before you put power to it. My money is on it will work but then I am a gambler and I like the longer odds.

Electronics are tougher than you think if you make sure they are dry before you turn on the juice.

I've found the tools themselves will often take a soaking. Batteries and chargers not so much. I would give the drill a good hose down of wd40 in every place I can get a shot inside. And plenty of time to dry.
I'll bet the drill makes it. And the battery does not.

Are you sure you want a drill that jumps off docks. ?

I would think if the battery is in the drill it shorted out. Probably burnt a switch or wire up. You never know it might be your lucky day.

I have a Nemo underwater drill that I use for this exact reason.

On a side note, if it's a reputable brand, (I pretty much use Dewalt tools) you can send it to the shop through a sales rep (I use my local builders supply) and get a quote on what it will cost to repair before you actually approve the repair. Quite often it's worth the cost. Just a thought.

It may work. You can't believe the number of times I have soaked myself and my sawsall cutting into overhead, backed up, sewer lines.
The sawsall won't work for a while, dry out, and be fine. And I always take a shower the next day.

I agree with dun, only one way to find out. Just squint your eyes and pull the trigger! Better yet! You might want to hand it to you daughters boyfriend ask him to put a couple of screws in your dock! :shock:

Damage would have probably happened to it when it took the plunge with the battery attached.. Again, the battery is the most likely failure point nowadays with circuitry in them, and they aren't protected very well.

Either way, I'd dry it out with compressed air and have it sit in a nice warm spot and pray for the best

I pulled the battery out and have it sitting in the bed of the truck. Looks like it should dry well today. I think I'll leave it till tomorrow and hope its dry then give it a try.

Its been a good drill just hope its not shot but if it is I've got my money worth out of it.

Batteries seem fine but only thing working on the drill is the light. I'll give it another day but I'm afraid I'll be buying a new drill.

Yes, its in rice. Still not working. Not giving up yet. Placed it in a plastic bag full of rice and sealed it under a vacuum. Vacuums do funny stuff to moisture so if this doesn't work I'll go to plan C.

I'm thinking about taking it apart. Not that I'll have any clue on what I'll be doing just simply for shyts and giggles. If, when re-assembled, there aren't to many extra parts and it works I'll be a happy camper. If not I'll just buy another while cursing the idiot who dropped it in the lake. (that would be me btw)

Jo, what type of battery does your drill use? If it's any of the lithium type batteries please discard the battery in a safe way and get a new battery. Water and lithium are a deadly combination. If the two ever get together you have a very explosive bomb on your hands.

Once you get it apart you can take the minnows and crawfish out. Maybe it won't smell so bad.
